Soto will have several prime years during this deal. He just turned 26, so you figure he could be very productive for 10 of those 15 years.
Lots of investment risk, but the return could be lucrative. If he does for the Mets what Bryce Harper has done for the Phillies, this will likely be a good signing.
But you have to be concerned with the gap between the “haves” and “have nots” getting farther apart. The reasoning behind the reserve clause was always that without it, the richest teams would buy up all the best players. Even though that was the support, until the amateur draft the richest teams got the best players anyway. The Yankees won most years and the game still thrived, so who knows. Maybe this is not much different than it ever was.
It does seem though that the only people who will be able to own a professional sports franchise will be the likes of Elon Musk, Warren Buffet and Jeff Bezos. The run of the mill billionaire won’t be able to compete.
Makes the Bryce Harper deal look amazing. These large market teams are playing a different game than our team is.

Yep 1td, it’s a headscratcher that teams aren’t making a harder push for Helsley.
These deals almost never work out for the club. The player has to stay healthy and stay at mvp level performance for a decade for it to work.
Also, you need 20 out of the 26 guys on your roster to play well to win a championship. One guy won’t carry youThis feels like it might be go down as the worst contract in baseball history. Soto is a bad defender so you’re likely paying for 12+ years of DH who has not much incentive to work to get better. Not that there was any chance, but I’m glad it’s not us getting him. Let’s re-evaluate in 5 years. But for now, I’d much rather have the Ohtani contract the Dodgers signed.
Soto is indeed a lousy outfielder. But entering his age 26 season, he should be MVP caliber offensively for the next five years or so, and really good for a few years after that. By the last third of this deal he will be a a drag on their payroll, but by then the financials may be such that he is considered a minor expense.
Yeah the Mets are hoping for 5 years of excellent years, 5 mediocre, and 5 they probably they don’t care. Soto just turning 26 means they may be able to get that as he has another 4 or 5 years in his prime. He definitely isn’t a great defender or baserunner, but his offensive game is one of the 5 bests. $765 million over 15 years is a huge gamble though. I was thinking maybe $550 million over 12 years, but Cohen would have went to probably whatever amount it took to get him.
Have you looked at the pitchers the Mets have acquired?
It looks like they spent their entire budget on Soto (and maybe Alonso).
Not sure that’s a recipe for winning the World Series.
