You mean Jesus Baez GC. I have heard he may be more suited for third base, but others on here will know a lot more than me about him.
A very good rule of thumb is the better the bat, the more suspicious you should be of the defense. A few lasers into the parking lot and the eyes roll back and all else is seen through a skewed lens.
Maybe Bobby Witt Jr. should stop hitting those lasers into the parking lot to focus on his defense. Oh wait he is also the best defensive SS as well.
I understand your point, but also players don’t just stop focusing on defense because they are good at offense. Instead, playing defense good enough to be an MLB SS is very hard. Hitting well at the MLB level is very hard. There just aren’t a lot of guys with the ceiling to do both let alone realize that ceiling.
Baez likely won’t play SS at the bigs though. Fingers crossed his approach works at the bigs as he is so aggressive I have concerns it won’t translate when facing MLB pitchers.
It’s been my experience that the majority of players who can really swing the bat also bring a mitt to the game. Of the top 10 all time HR leaders, 7 have been awarded GG’s and no one had come up the idea for that award when The Babe was playing. However, he could certainly record outs both in the OF and on the mound.
Probably not. Certainly not for Joshua and probably not for Jesus. I’m not sure he’s going to be ok at 3B either. He still needs to get better all around at defense.
Jesus Baez will not be the Cardinals SS unless Masyn Winn turns into Pete Kozma. Please tell me that isn’t going to happen.
Baez needs to learn 3B if he wants to bring his bat to STL.
Jesus Baez glove was the biggest question when we acquired him. He has an arm. I’ve seen it in action a couple of times. He did make an error at SS when I saw him this year. When I saw him in Peoria after we got him last season you could tell his bat was the calling card and the sound it made when he made contact was different than anyone Peoria or South Bend had on it’s roster.

Stavinoha was a long time minor leaguer who had 109 RBI in 20 more games played at Triple-A at the age of 29. Baez is just 21 with his 2026 season across A+ and AA.
He really had a great year with the bat. It’s also helped him having so many other guys getting on base in front of him. That certainly contributes to the RBI total.
Between both Baez’s, Raniel Rodriguez, Jack Gurevitch, Tai Peete, and for the most part Deniel Ortiz and Leo Bernal, we have had some outstanding offensive performances this season. In addition, we acquired two guys from the Brewers who were also having outstanding years in Frias and Ragsdale. That’s almost a whole team of exceptional offensive prospects right there. There were also quite a few “very good” offensive seasons from many others out there (Colton Ledbetter, Sammy Hernandez, Yordalin Peña, and Ryan Campos – just to name the ones who first come to mind).
