Rangers: Jordan Montgomery, who tossed six innings of one-run ball against the Mariners on Thursday, is set to make this start on regular rest. The lefty, acquired at the Trade Deadline, has been the Rangers’ most consistent starter over the past two months, posting a 2.79 ERA in 11 starts. He’s got just two career postseason appearances — one with the Yankees in 2020 and one with the Cardinals in ‘22 — totaling just 6 2/3 innings. Having spent most of the season with St. Louis, Montgomery hasn’t yet faced the Rays this year.

Wouldn’t mind bring him back here in 2024. But given what seems to be a soap opera between our manager and players, he may find it advisable to take another offer.

I would rather the Cardinals give big bucks to Jordan Montgomery than to Blake Snell. Snell may have more upside but he is injury prone and you never know what you will get from year to year. Montgomery is consistently a number 3 and sometimes a number 2.

Was there ever any effort to sign Monty to an extension when he was here?

I wondered about that, too. It could be that the Cardinals took his temperature about an extension, and were told by his agent that he wanted to test free agency. But I doubt that we’ll ever know for sure if that happened.

Bling I never heard anything but speculation about a Montgomery extension. If there was any kind of offer it was a well kept secret. Montgomery stated publicly he wouldn’t negotiate during the season. Boras is his agent. The Cardinals want discounts. Not surprising nothing materialized. As far as him coming back in free agency, who knows.

If Boras is his agent the odds of him coming back to StL are very low.
