Not a surprise but the first I have seen a national writer seem to confirm it.
Pederson just makes too much sense. He’s a lefty who crushes RHP, OF/DH type. He may come on a one year deal, or perhaps a year with an option. It’s unlikely he’d need more than two years given the 2020 he had, and the fact that he’s a platoon bat. I feel he may be the most likely player on the market to hit 30 HR next year and if you potentially had him for two years, he could be a heck of a DH platoon that could allow you to target whatever you needed most (SS/3B/OF) on the free agent market. Pederson plus one or even two (if the Cards get frisky) of Seager/Lindor/Correa/Arenado/Conforto/etc could be part of a pretty good offense when combined with Carlson, Goldy, Dejong, perhaps O’Neill or Gorman or Montero in 2022.
I have been pro-Pederson for a long time. Like st25 stated he makes a lot of sense and checks a lot of boxes for the Cardinals. There could be cheaper options after the non-tenders though.

So, would this put Bader on the bench 75% of the time?
That would be up to Shildt, and depend a lot on whether the DH is still in play for 2021. It would cut into the playing time of all the young OFers, most likely.
I think it’s a solid move if the cardinals want to pay for it and use him wisely. I know the average isn’t what you’d like it but I think a lefty power bat has much more appeal for them especially in Busch 3. Only question is if the ownership really wants it. Will they want to cut corners elsewhere to make it happen (Wainwright).

That’s the big question, for sure. It seems that the budget can probably include Waino and Yadi, but not much more. Spending on Pederson could put that in jeopardy. Perhaps a deal with Pederson could be around a $8-9M AAV over two years but with some backloading? Something like $6M-12M, or make the second a mutual option. Still, payroll would probably increase over the baseline if Waino and Yadi returned.
