Interesting to note that the majority of those players acquired in the top ranked Red Sox system were by Bloom. I was a little surprised they didn’t give him more time, but we will see if he can do the same in STL.
Bloom didn’t decide that Mookie Betts had to go. Ownership told him to cut payroll and they wouldn’t pay to keep Betts. But Bloom was responsible for the trade that ended up heavily in the Dodgers’ favor. I think that did him in as the guy who traded their franchise player and didn’t get much in return. There is probably more to it than that, but from a fan perspective, it is a pretty accurate summary, I think.
On the other hand, Mo survived losing his franchise player because Pujols got to free agency and appeared to be greedy in the view of many. The Cardinals at least made an attempt to keep him. But the Red Sox traded Betts before he ever got to that point because they were acting like a small market team instead of one of the game’s powerhouses. Expecting Bloom to turn the Red Sox into the Rays was doomed to fail.
Boston also included David Price in the Betts trade as a salary dump which impacted the return they got from the Dodgers. Downs and Wong did not work out.
