I’ve sort of been under the impression that 4.5 seconds from home to 1stbase is about the average. Anything less and the runner is fast. Anything more and the runner is slow.
I guess my question is – when does the clock start on a batted ball?
When the bat makes contact with the ball?
When the runner makes his initial move out of the batters box?
Or when he clears the batters box?
Anybody know when the stopwatch starts with regards to runner speed to 1stbase?

October 7, 2025 at 11:25 pm #293904This reminds me of a joke we would use on the slowest runners on my youth/high school baseball teams. We would tell them that you could use a sun dial to record their time to first base.

October 10, 2025 at 7:07 pm #294051Back in the day seems like I recall people saying Mickey Mantle could get from home to first in something like 3.1 seconds from the left side. This was before he had all those leg ailments and injuries.
On the other hand, a buddy told me years ago about listening to a game the year Ken Reitz was on the Giants. There was a runner on first and Reitz was at bat, and my buddy said the announcer goes, “….here’s a ground ball to deep short – no way they can turn two on this….out at second and…..OUT AT FIRST…….pause….. Reitz took an hour getting down that line!”
