What is Daryl Dean Spencer famous for?
Anybody ever heard of him?

Daryl Spencer was primarily a shortstop – came up with the Giants in the ‘50s, traded to us in the early ‘60s. We then dealt him to the Dodgers after he was our primary shortstop for a year plus.
Long time coach at Wichita State. My buddy who played in college in the ‘70s played against WSU when Spencer was their coach.
Not sure what he is noted for as far as trivia though.
Ah, cool. Yeah, he was with the Giants when they relocated from New York.
Seems like Spencer was sort of a Paul DeJong type – kind of a bigger guy for a shortstop, good power. Probably did not strikeout as much as DeJong, but you could say that about most players. 😀
I like his ‘61 Post Cereal card. He looks a lot like Ken Boyer on that card – they have the same pose on their cards in that set and almost look like brothers.
I don’t know about all that but Rat, you may want to pick up Amazon Prime streaming. Right now they have the complete series of Barnaby Jones and seasons 1-7 of Mannix. We might not see you post for a week!

Sorry, but thanks anyway. I already have ALL the Barnaby Jones and Mannix DVDs. Watched them all many times. About to hit the tub and then watch an episode of Mannix since it’s Saturday night.Tried to post the two baseball cards I was talking about, but not sure it worked. I looked up Spencer, which of course led to mention of the ballpark the first MLB game in California was played in. Good old Seals Stadium, home of the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific coast League. In the absense of MLB, minor league ball had been big business in California for decades, and while Seals was a minor league park, it was substantial enough to serve until Candlestick was built.
It was big business like I said, and the only game in town, so it was well documented in the local media, which was not second rate, as San Fran was a big city. As a result, the old ballparks there are documented for posterity better than most minor league parks from the old days. There are some photos going back before 1900, and ample photos of the parks in the 1910-1920-1930 time frame. The parks that existed before Seals, in other words, and there were several in San Fran going back to around 1900 and a bit before that even. But proper enclosed ballparks from about 1900. The first of those, Recreation Park was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire, and the team played the rest of the season across the bay in Oakland.
The Hollywood Stars was a minor league team of that era, which had migrated to LA from the Mission District in San Fran, the Mission Reds I think they were called, which is where the San Fran Seals played too. They had shared a ballpark for awhile. Two Pacific Coast League teams in the same city and the same ballpark. MiLB was big business. I’m an old ballpark hound, so California was a goldmine for me. edit: When I say these old PCL parks of the 1900-1920 time frame were well documented, I an not kidding. There is far more photographic evidence of those parks in San Fran than there is of Robison, the Cardinals home field on Natural Bridge of that same time frame, before Sportsman’s on Grand was built.
Nice trivia question and answer. And in regards to fires, I listened to the KMOX broadcast in ’93 by Jack Buck and Mike Shannon as they explained why the Cardinals/Braves game was going to experience a long delay. An out of control blaze in the broadcast booth at Fulton Co. Stadium. When I turned the radio on and noticed they weren’t yet playing, I immediately thought it was raining…Haha!
