That’s probably true Brian.But will just Goldy fix this offense? Will the offensive upgrade balance out Carpenters ragarm defense at 3B?Plus what about Fowler?Right now I would play O`Neill 7 days a week over Fowler.If the only offensive upgrade is Goldy and Carp plays 3B until his shoulder caves again and granite glove JMartinez ends up getting the most playing time in RF then the Cards are still running in place.
Yes I think Goldy fixes this offense. This dude is elite. He reminds me of the guy I use as an avatar except Goldy is not as injury prone and probably has better control over his personal finances.
Goldy in this offense is a big upgrade. Then you have Carp in place of Gyorko, which is another big upgrade.
On the defensive side, you then have Goldy, who’s a superior defender to Carp at 1B. Carp is probably a downgrade from Gyorko but not as big as everyone seems to think. Personally, I felt Carp was fine, even good at 3B last season early before they yo yoed him around. At every other position you’ve got a plus (Dejong, O’Neill, if he starts, Yadi, Ozuna if he rebounds) to potentially plus-plus (Wong, Bader) defender. Dejong may never get one, but that’s 7 guys who either have, should have or could win Gold Gloves in the lineup. It’s hard to quibble about losing defense at one position when you have that.
Bw52, that is the point. DeWitt III did NOT say all the eggs would be in Goldschmidt’s basket. He said they would all be in Harper’s basket. The clear implication was that they could do more to improve the team with Goldschmidt – which of course makes sense given the huge difference in the size of the financial commitment.
Problem there is if you only get GOldy for 1 year, you hosed again for next year needing a impact bat again!
After being shunned for three years in a row the Cardinals need to focus on 2019. We can worry about 2020 this time next year. Even if Ozuna and Goldy don’t come back we would have two extra picks and a lot of freed up payroll space.
GS, if Goldy repeats his 2018 next season and becomes a FA, what would you guess his FA contract looks like (yrs / $) ?
I question taking the risk of paying good prospects for a possible rental.Just seems like a uneeded risk .That line of thinking used to work and has not lately been true.Goldy is a very fine player but it is still possibly adding another over 30 player and hoping to sign him to a extension and hoping he doesn`t suddenly pull a Fowler and crater out.At least with a younger Harper even with a not up to snuff season you have a better chance of a bounceback due to youth.

7 former, likely or possible future GG players in the field if you have Goldy at 1B and Carp at 3B. The defense will be fine, if O’Neill starts most games in RF.

A: It would reflect whichever of the two he agrees to. No extension and Arizona gets an offer from StL for less in return (or they trade him to another team instead).The defense will be fine, if O’Neill starts most games in RF.
Ahh…but we all know that as long as Dexter Fowler is on the team, they are going to keep trudging him out there in RF.
Please share some transactions that absolutely make no sense.Why strengthen yourself at one spot and then turn around and degrade another spot? Makes no sense at all.For years all we hear is how bad the defense is and we hear about how its going to be fixed.Then the team thinks moving a barely adequate 1B to 3B where he is underwhelming to say it politely and then to want to play 2 lousy RFs (Fowler,JMart).It is stunningly stupid IMHO.
