I know who my favorite is. I’m pretty sure I know who’s the most talented, and without question I know who was the best defensive first baseman of all time. Cepeda’s my favorite of the three not only because I was 11 yrs. old when the HOF’er featured his only MVP season as the Cardinals won the WS, but also because he was Harry Caray’s protege on the radio. I saw Hernandez play on the right side of the Redbird IF with Reitz, Templeton and Smith over on the other side. He had a mitt and a range like no other 1B’man and an arm like a RF’er. He could also hit. Especially with important runners onboard. Goldschmidt may very well be the most talented of the three 1B’man and could win his first NL MVP this offseason, but I’ll have to see how his entire career pans out. Especially his time as a Cardinal. Cepeda and Hernandez are former NL MVP’s and Cardinal WS winners, so that places them both in front of Goldschmidt in my file. At any rate, the greatest right handed hitter of all-time, played 1B for the St. Louis, Cardinals…
I like all three of those guys. As a 13 year old kid, I loved it when we got Cepeda for Ray Sadecki.
We went through St. Louis that summer and my dad and I caught a game, while my mom and sisters stayed at the hotel and went swimming in the pool. I was anxious to see Cepeda in a Cardinal uniform, but alas, Red played Tito Francona at first base that night.
Hernandez was with the Cardinals much longer than the Baby Bull and probably ranks above him and Goldy.
Goldy has been solid, and down right great this year. But he needs to get farther into post season to really cement his Cardinal legacy.
My heart lies with Cepeda, my mind with Hernandez. I still have the original 1967 APBA card set with that great Cepeda card. The unanimous NL MVP that year.
