So, is there ANYBODY currently working for the Cardinals that was around in a responsible position for the last full-blown rebuild?
That’s where we are right now. It’s crystal clear. Look at the pitching staff. Look at the outfield. Now look over your shoulder at AAA. It ain’t there pal.
Mo never has so why would we think he is capable of it? Sure you may say we don’t know that he can’t do it and you’d be right – we also don’t know that he can. We need a GM that has been there and done that.
We need to go get Theo Epstein. He got the Red Sox at title and the Cubs a title. Will ownership spend the money to bring him in AND give him the money he needs to build and retain a real WS contending roster?
May 6, 2023 at 5:36 pm #219399So you want to fire our puppet GM and not our POBO?
May 6, 2023 at 5:37 pm #219400They’re not going to spend money on a GM or a manager. Or give a new GM money to spend. This team has Goldy, Nado and Contreras. There is no more money to spend.
May 6, 2023 at 6:23 pm #219406The last Cardinal rebuild? When was that? They have always tinkered around the edges instead of tearing it down because they were afraid of what it would do to ticket sales. It appears they may not have a choice this time.
May 6, 2023 at 9:50 pm #219447“What is Theo Epstein doing now?
Epstein is best remembered for busting a couple of lengthy curses, first for his hometown Red Sox in 2004 and then again for the Chicago Cubs in 2016. But he’s taking a break from building championship-winning teams and is currently working as a consultant for MLB.”We could go hire this guy tomorrow.
I was in Busch when the Red Sox won the World Series in ’04. He owes me one.
May 6, 2023 at 10:31 pm #219449I think Epstein works for the commissioner’s office. I doubt if BDW would ever hire him because Theo likes to spend a lot of money.

ParticipantThere were more fans booing yesterday. Did anyone in the front office hear them? Mo has been caught with his pants down. This downturn is exposing some other of his mistakes also. In the off-season he got us a catcher and forgot about the rotation. The problem is that the catcher can’t catch and the rotation we were left with can’t pitch.
May 7, 2023 at 11:45 am #219492I’m not sure there’s even such a thing as a Cardinal GM anymore. The term I’d use for what’s presented as a GM in this organization would be a spokesperson. If he indeed manages anything at all, I can’t discern what it is. He says something or other every now and again and when he does make a rare appearance he certainly looks as though he spends an ample amount of time at the day spa and hair salon, but no, I can’t at all identify what it is that he manages.
May 7, 2023 at 12:01 pm #219499When people say GM they are usually referring to the guy in charge of the front office but in today’s MLB it isn’t the GM it is the POBO, which is Mo. They all got fancy new titles.
And when it comes to Mo he is in charge of a lot, probably way too much. I can’t imagine guys like Herzog, LaRussa, LaSorda, Anderson, Weaver, Cox, and Leyland tolerating having their decisions made for them from above. They wouldn’t stay around long.
May 7, 2023 at 12:23 pm #219505Thanks, gscottar. Yeah, it’s not at all unlike the concept applied to a simple shell game. A simple shuffling of an abbreviation or acronym that’s designed to be deceptively confusing. Health plans are really good at it. HMO, HIPPA, HIU. etc. There’s literally thousands of them and they’re all tactically and strategically deployed. They’re all presented as important and useful, but the primary importance and use is to be deceptive and confusing with the purpose of being entirely certain that the end result, as always, is to expand and enlarge the only symbol or abbreviation that carries with it any significance…$
May 7, 2023 at 1:35 pm #219520It’s a mixed bag on how teams organize/entitle their front offices. There’s the Cardinal way, then some have one guy filling both POBO and GM (e.g., Braves), and some still go with just the GM as lead guy (Astros). The Red Sox evidently don’t like the POBO title and call their equivalent position CBO, Chief Baseball Officer, with a different guy filling their subordinate GM position. It’s good to make people sound important and feel smart.
“Manager” is way off base for Oli. He would be more aptly labeled as the Liaison Officer for Front Office and Player Activities, or just call him the LOFOPA.
May 7, 2023 at 1:40 pm #219524I was thinking more like Assistant GM of Daycare Activities. AGMDA
May 7, 2023 at 1:47 pm #219525That’s fitting and descriptive too, gscott — kinda like when Oli put O’Neill in time out earlier this year, lol.
May 7, 2023 at 1:47 pm #219526In the business world there is a phenomena called title creep. Increasingly exalted sounding titles for the same job. The PBO used to be called the GM. Same job. The GM used to be called Asst. GM. Same job. Assistant GMs used to be called something else. Same job.
May 7, 2023 at 2:09 pm #219537Yeah using fancy special words to describe somthing.
Garbage Man — Sanitation Engineer
Like that.
May 7, 2023 at 2:17 pm #219540Back in the day, just before I was in business school in the early ‘80s, there was a popular book called the “Peter Principle”. The author’s last name was “Peter”, hence the title. The principle is that people rise in responsibility and title in an organization until they are at a place that is above their ability. The quick phrase for that was people rise to the level of their incompetence.
That might be where the Cardinal organization is in some capacity.
May 7, 2023 at 3:00 pm #219547bikemike, I say it’s more severe than the Peter Principle. It’s more than just a few ill-advised promotions due to inaccurately projecting that a person’s skills and success in the current position will translate into success at the next position up.
The current situation is worse because they have purged experienced talent over the years that should be an asset to the organization. This has happened due to leadership’s insecurities and threats perceived of those people, thus they are squelched/eliminated. Ironically, Mo and Bill have run off some of the very people that could save them from themselves.
The book that comes to mind for me is Hans Christian Anderson’s, The Emperor’s New Clothes. The Emperor surrounds himself with nothing but “yes men” and they are all afraid to tell him what’s wrong with his new wardrobe for fear of you know what. Sorry for the mental image, but Mo is the naked guy in this story.
