Regarding that little pause and hop/skip that Fernando Tatis does at 3rdbase after he hits a homerun…..if he hit a homerun off one of the subject pitchers what would happen to Tatis his next atbat?
A) Nothing
B) End up flat on his back
C) Nurse some sore ribs the next couple of days
D) OtherProbably B and C Rat. I would also include Baez when he pats himself on the back as he runs around the bases after hitting a homer.
Alas, the game has changed in that regard. Last night I witnessed Edmundo Sosa and Johnny Cueto giving each other some kind of high five at first base. The old school players wouldn’t go for that.
Some of our young poster’s first reaction to this thread may have been “who is Michael Jenkins?”. At the very least, Tatis and Baez would have been quick recipients of a serious dose of chin music 🎶
All professional sports have changed to where more of the “look at me” stuff is part of the game. When football players started to celebrate touchdowns, the old school guys would say “Act like you’ve been there before.”
But yes, if you take those pitchers listed and keep them in their paradigm, and throw them out there today they would not care for the antics. But put a Gibby or Drysdale growing up 50 years later, and you would have a Scherzer type of guy thinking it’s part of the game.
In fact I would not be surprised if today’s pitchers maybe do not like the showmanship is okay, as it attracts attention to the player and game, which benefits everyone. In other words, it is all (or mostly) about the money.
If a guy cutsy twirled his bat at home plate he would have been nailed.
I assume that is referring to Harrison Bader. You know, I never gave that bat twirl thing he does a second thought. Just seems to be his routine, sort of like some guys do the constant batting glove undo-redo routine.
One of the best routines back in the day was Rocky Colavito’s stretch regimen. He would hold the bat over his head and go through some stretching gyrations before getting in the box. But as everyone said back then, “Don’t knock the Rock!”
Another reason to give some chin music to a batter is if he steps out of the box to adjust his batting gloves after every pitch. Then is slow to get back into the box to get ready for the next pitch. If I were a pitcher who liked to keep a fairly rapid pace, it would drive me batty.
“Chin music” and “batty”….sweet, Cranny. Trivia question here….if anyone answers this correctly, I truly believe that the baseball Gods will embrace that person when they venture to that big diamond in the sky.

Din-din today is going to be a ribeye steak in the air fryer, a couple of ears of Aces High sweet corn, a Pepsi, and a bowl of homemade ice cream.
I probably will miss the game this afternoon since I’ll be down at the golf course hitting balls.

In the 1800s it was a term used to describe razzing from the fans. Somehow during WWII it became a term used to describe a pitch up under the chin. I don’t know who coined it.
The most famous pitcher in the past was Sal (the “Barber”) Maglie. His up and in would give the batter a close shave. Barbers used to shave customers with a long straight edge razor. That’s how he got his nickname.
