Who knows, maybe he pitches well and we can flip him for a lottery ticket in 2 weeks. Stranger things have happened. Hard to dislike this signing when he isn’t really blocking anyone emerging and he may be needed filler

It seems like he was an emergency find after a falling out with Cabrera over the weekend.

John Mozeliak on Genesis Cabrera getting DFAed: “I don’t think he loved the role he was in & ultimately as I was trying to get this to work, we just kept hitting some headwind. Now, he’ll get that opportunity to do it somewhere else.”

Oliver Marmol on Genesis Cabrera being designated for assignment today: “I thought it was the right time for him to have a change of scenery.”

Both from John Denton twitter feed.

Overdue. When Yadi had to go to the mound and scold Cabrera during a postseason game, I was done with him.

That’s a good word for Johnny’s vocabulary. In fact, it sums up his temperament and character very well. “Headwind Johnny” has a nice ring to it…

Haha, 1td. Wonder if some reporter will ever tell him, “Hey Headwind Johnny, you’re talking at a baseball presser, not an international economic forum.”

I always liked Cabrera, a lefty with a live arm. But he has lost velocity since his early days with the club and can lose the strike zone.

Still I don’t see an upgrade with Tepera. I would have stuck with Cabrera and used him in a deadline deal. But then I am sure the FO has talked to clubs about him and there is probably little interest.

Nothing says trying to compete like getting rid of a guy an ERA over 5 for a guy with an ERA over….checks notes…over 7. Lol

Genesis (properly pronounced “Hen-a-sis”) “Cabby” Cabrera, is going to make some lucky club a nice little pitcher. With some rest(I would put him on the shelve for the remainder of 2023) and fine tuning, Genesis should be on the verge of blossoming into something special in 2024.

    I pronounce his first name, “Ab-a-cab.” “It’s an illusion, it’s a game…Or a reflection, of someone else’s name”…Haha!

So, let’s see. If no other team claims Gene Cranberry then he can accept an assignment back with St. Louis.

    Correct?

Yep, it sounds like Mo is moving on even if he doesn’t get a bucket of balls in return.

Hopefully most of our pen will be gone by next spring.

Not impressed with Tepera so far, although it is the old “small sample size” as far as his work.

Given the choice between an inconsistent lefty, and an inconsistent righty, I would stick with the lefty.

The post draft MLB.com write up of the catcher we got for Genesis focuses on his prep hitting ability rather than defense. I was hoping with his puny offensive numbers that maybe at least he was a good defense no hit guy

“Per a few sources that spent time with him in the Blue Jays system, he was well-liked and is a “total student of the game”, which is always great praise to receive, especially as a catcher. “He’s very advanced defensively and has definitely shown some raw power,” says someone who worked closely with him in Dunedin (the Blue Jays’ Single-A affiliate).

During Hernandez’s high school years, scouts were high on his power tool, but that has yet to translate since he made his pro debut. The 5-foot-9 backstop is obviously not a big man, but he is fairly athletic and uses his size to his advantage, especially on defense. After spending time as a catcher/infielder hybrid in his high school days, he still possesses the agility and quick feet to perhaps line up at second or third base in a pinch down the line (think Austin Barnes of the Dodgers). At one point earlier this season, he even led the A-ball in DRS behind the plate by a long shot.”

Hmmm, interesting. Sounds like a long range plan in case we move Herrera as part of a deal for pitching, with Hernandez possibly developing into Contreras’ heir apparent in a few years.

I wish the new kid well, but I’m guessing Mo just took whatever somebody would give him for a DFA guy.

Bernal and Crooks would rank ahead of this guy if Herrera is traded.
