Just wondering if everyone here realizes that the very first batter Bob Gibson ever faced in the big leagues homered off of him? April 15, 1959. LA Memorial Coliseum. Gibson’s debut. I believe his name was Baxes or something like that.
Gibby was wild and inconsistent early in his career. I have mentioned some about following along 1964 season with this year at a site online. Believe or not, Gibson, who by then had matured into a very good pitcher, went I believe it was six consecutive starts where he gave up 6 earned runs.
Man, had social media been around then people like us would be posting all kind so things like “how can Johnny Keane not see that Gibson does not have it? He should have been the guy we traded for Brock.” 🙂
