It’s likely MLB is going to go to 16 teams in the post season in 2022. I don’t expect these things to happen but what I’d like to see with it.
1) Eliminate divisions and have a “balanced schedule”.
-each team plays a home and away series vs each same league opponent.
-each team has 1 series vs opposite league (alternate the home and away annually vs opposite league opponents)
-each team given 2 “rivals” and have an extra home and away series vs “rivals” ex. Cardinals could be “rivals” vs Chicago and Cincinnati and play them in an extra home and away on “rivalry weeks” MLB can promote where everyone is playing a “rival”
-“competitive balance” have an extra 2 series against similar records from the previous year. I’d like to see this kept in the same league, but with odd number teams I haven’t thought it all the way through on exactly how it would work. They pay people to figure that out.
-this should be enough to bring the schedule to close to 154 games which I’d shorten it to with expanded playoffs, but I don’t see owners giving up the 4 home games even when parks aren’t being filled now.
2) playoffs expanded to 16 teams with the top 8 records from each league making the playoffs.
-first round best of 3 with the top 4 seeds hosting all 3 games, giving incentive to being a top 4 record in the league. Ex. (As it stands now) SD @ SF, CIN @ LA, PHIL @ MIL, ATL @ STL would be the first round. I see owners not liking their team making the playoffs and not getting to host a game, but I like the incentive of finishing top 4 being there.
-This also eliminates the possibility of a season like this year where SF or LA is going to be forced to play a 1 game play in even have a top 2 record in all of baseball.
– then 5,7,7 game series to follow as normal.I think you expand to six post season teams, with the division winners getting in plus the next three best records. But, the teams are seeding by W-L record. No automatic first round bye for winning a division, although most years it would work that way for two of the teams.
Top two records get first round bye, even if the second best record was not a division winner. 3-6 and 4-5 play best of three. The two winners are then seeded according to record against the two bye teams for a best of five. Winners of those series play best of seven LCS.
And yes, regular season is cut to 154. No big changes to current schedule other than cut out eight games.
