I saw a post on another website that said R.I.P. to Whitey.
Anybody know anything?

ParticipantYes. This morning. A legend in Cardinal history.
April 16, 2024 at 10:32 am #248273Met Whitey at a local SABR event some 12 years ago or more. Great guy. Bold, outgoing, not afraid to shake things up. Good friend of Roger Maris back in the day.
When he was managing our club, Jack Buck would do an interview with Whitey at his home in Independence, MO (I believe that was where lived) sometime around mid-January I think. Man, those were terrific programs.
He will be missed.

Not afraid to shake up a team and make bold moves. RIP

ParticipantJust read the article confirming his death. Very sad day for me now. My favorite manager of all time and to me the standard by which all cardinal managers are held up to.

ParticipantWill always remember him marching out to the mound with resolve to make a pitching change. There was never a doubt who was in charge.
April 16, 2024 at 11:01 am #248279So long, Whitey. Thanks for making Busch Memorial Stadium the most exciting place to be in the world when your teams were battling for another win. I’ll never forget the countless thrills those games provided.
April 16, 2024 at 11:06 am #248280RIP to the Rat. One of the best to ever do it. The Cardinal teams of the 80’s were a joy to watch.
April 16, 2024 at 11:52 am #248290Whitey was a St Louis Cardinals baseball revival. RIP.
April 16, 2024 at 1:40 pm #248296In my view, the foremost testament of Whitey Herzog’s contribution to St. Louis, Cardinal baseball is that during the 1980 season of his arrival in St. Louis total attendance was a little less than 1.4 million. Seven years later attendance was well over 3 million Cardinal fans.
April 16, 2024 at 1:52 pm #248298Now Whitey’s up in heaven — and still out-managing Lasorda.

I bet he is, Bobby. Talking(or playing) baseball, as we speak, with Red, George, Jack, Mike, Lou and Bob. These great players, managers and announcers are now leaving us at a faster and faster pace……which means we’re next. Are you guys prepped to go to that big diamond in the sky? I’m not.
April 16, 2024 at 2:29 pm #248303I’m the baseball managerial world, results matter, and Whitey delivered.
April 16, 2024 at 3:32 pm #248308One of the best skippers this team has had. We have been privileged to have such great managers come through here in the 80’s and 90’s.
RIP Whitey.
April 16, 2024 at 4:04 pm #248309To the White Rat:
Thanks for being a big personality – the personality behind those fun Cardinals teams of the 80’s. I recited it so many times as a kid . . . Coleman, Smith, and Herr . . . Clark, McGee, and Pendleton. You had a lot of other fun core players too: Lonnie Smith, Silent George, Tewksbury, Dave LaPoint, Andujar, Horton and Dayley, Pags, Bruce Sutter, and my personal first baseball idol Bob Forsch. You did a lot of things differently, but in a very simple, uncomplicated way. And you seemed to never take life too seriously. I hope that you’re having a great time today up in the heavens – smiling as you sit back in a boat on an extended fishing trip. And I hope that one day the fellas decide to put a ballgame together. And if it’s a beautiful sunny day and the game is all for fun, then I’m sure you’ll be their leader of choice Whitey. Thanks for sharing your time here on earth with the rest of us. Hopefully we’ll all get to watch you and that sunny baseball game again. I can smell the beer and hot dogs now. Good bye Whitey and thanks for the memories.
April 16, 2024 at 8:47 pm #248333I have felt that Whitey has been the best Cardinal manager in their history. He had an eye for not just talent but for winning ball players and was a very smart game manager. Saw him outmaneuver the Cubs for a win in Wrigley once. Don’t remember the details but a late inning move that left the Cubs at a disadvantage.
I believe had he remained as General Manager he would have excelled there as well. When Gussy gave up control of the team it really hampered Whitey and certainly led to his retirement.
One of the greatest Cardinals ever. RIP and condolences to his family.

ParticipantSad news indeed. But Whitey had a full life and had many, many fans. Hey when you get a chance send us a post of your first lineup up there of all the guys that played for you so that the commentors here can argue and complain about the order. You should know what the deal is.
