I don’t know about a “bullitt”, but it looks like he was darn fortunate not to be in the plane. Reminds me of Waylon Jennings, who lost the coin flip to ride on the plane Buddy Holly took after the concert in Iowa back in February 1959.
If people don’t know the story of Jack “Lucky” Lohrke, check it out – he dodged a full six gun of bullets.
June 8, 2026 at 5:02 pm #309302Nice story bikemike on Lohrke. I wasn’t familiar with it. Glad Yadi’s family is okay.
I think it was Valens who won a coin flip, but not with Waylon. Waylon agreed to let the Big Bopper fly because the Big Bopper was sick.
As I’ve been retired a few years now, I listen to much more music these days, streaming random classic rock lists that take me back to my teenage years in the 70s. I’m always drawn to American Pie when it comes up.
One last thing, my wife worked at the Murrah Building in OKC (McVeigh bombing of 95). Fortunately, we left the area in 89 when the military relocated me. My wife’s former coworkers who were actually in the office at the time of the bombing were killed. Fortunately some of them were away in meetings. One secretary, though, had baked some brownies for an office luncheon that day, but forgot and left them in her car. At a random time later she left the building to go get the brownies. The bombing happened was while she was out, so she survived. Can you imagine being that person?
June 9, 2026 at 11:06 am #309331Holy cow, Euro! That is some story about the lasy who stepped out of the Murrah building just before the bombing!!
We are not guaranteed anything in life. This is a lesson to us all – make every day worth while. Count your blessings. Was going through some of my baseball cards earlier this morning and ran across a Roberto Clemente – now there was a wonderful human being.
June 9, 2026 at 12:35 pm #309334Indeed, what a story, Euro! Most everything is about timing. Back in high school a couple classmates were killed by a drunk driver. An acquaintance of mine said he was supposed to be with them, but his parents wouldn’t let him go as it was a school night. He commented on how close he came to death, but in reality, if he had gone with them, the timing of matters would have been different, so those two unfortunate souls would not have been in the line of fire of the drunk driver. Totally not their fault, but if his parents were not so strict, those 2 lads would most likely be alive and kicking to this day. So the next time you head on back inside from your garage cussing like a sailor because you once again forget to get your car keys, take solace in the idea that your lapse in memory may have just thrown the timing off from being in a nasty accident……or if you want to look at the dark side of it, it may have just cost you your life.
June 9, 2026 at 3:06 pm #309348Speaking along these lines.
I assume everybody remembers the plane crash that killed the University of Evansville basketball team. December 13, 1977. There was one player that did not make the trip that night. I believe he was suffering from some slight injury. Irregardless, his life was spared that night.
Having said this, two weeks after the plane crash the player that wasn’t on the flight was killed in a car wreck with his brother.
Imagine that.

June 9, 2026 at 4:40 pm #309360I long ago reached a point in time in which I thank my creator for every single good breath of fresh air that I’m afforded. Each and every day is bonus time and I’ve also come to understand that, when all is said and done, very few things in life are at all worth worrying about. I’m simply forever grateful for the things that bring genuine joy and happiness and I always do my best to focus my thoughts on the sunny side of life. I’ll steal a line from my namesake who was affectionately known as, “Walking Underwear.” You can sum up life in this world with one simple word…”Youneverknow”
June 10, 2026 at 5:37 pm #309465I am similar to 1TD in that I try to focus on my good fortunate and blessings. I still fail at that more than I really should, but at this point in time I am “playing with house money” as far as life is concerned.
I have been to several high school reunions and they always have those displays of classmates who have moved on from this life. It’s always a sober reminder to be thankful and do your best to make another person’a life journey a little more pleasant for having yourself as a friend or acquaintance. Be slow to criticize and quick to forgive. Or as it is sometimes put, “don’t sweat the small stuff.”
June 11, 2026 at 12:22 am #309518Amen to that, Bikemike. I lost my precious wife to breast cancer last November. We both lived through that fight together for almost three years before we finally had no choice but to say goodbye to one another. We shared life together as spouse and soul mates for almost 40 years. The last three years of her life were anything other than easy for either one of us, but those three years brought entirely into precise focus for both of us the very few things that are genuinely important and are to be held dear and close in this world. I sure do miss her a whole lot, but I’m thoroughly convinced she’s happy and smiling every time she looks on from above to see or hear me do or say something silly or stupid. She always told me that I was her clown and I happen to believe we’ll be together again before too long and I’ll get to hear her laugh and see her sweet smile. Then she’ll ask me to unload all those bags of potting mix from the truck so she can get started on growing all of her pretty flowers…Haha!

June 12, 2026 at 4:26 pm #309630I echo the thoughts of our fellow TCNers 1TD. Man, 40 years. My heart goes out to you and your beloved.
June 12, 2026 at 6:06 pm #309635Good stuff 1td and other posters.
1td, your faith that the future will be even better than a wonderful past is great inspiration to handle hardships. I believe you are correct that these things are temporary. A better time is ahead both of you to share.
June 14, 2026 at 8:55 pm #309944Nearly missed the later part of this thread. Very sorry to read of your tremendous loss, TD! I definitely believe something awaits us after death. I think that great people such as TD will have many wonderful companions in the hereafter. And those of us who have not been kind in life will suffer from eternal loneliness. I think we are all in for a surprise.
June 14, 2026 at 9:51 pm #309948Thanks for all the kind and thoughtful words guys. I’m not sure I could have lived through the intense sadness and sorrow if it weren’t for the support of family, friends and, first and foremost, faith in my creator to see me through the loss of my dear and precious wife. I still shed some tears and probably always will, but gradually I’ve been able to shed quite a few of those tears with a smile on my face remembering all of the joys in life that we shared together, so that right there tells me I’m getting better day by day. In any case, thanks again guys.
