Would we like to have him as our manager?
I think I do.
He did it well for years in Milwaukee and he’s got the Cubs rolling.
I’m never that impressed with managers who win big with the Dodgers and the Yankees because – who wouldn’t win with those rosters?
Joe Torre comes to mind.
Hopefully Bloom can get in Bill’s ear over the winter and get him to break open the piggy bank to get 3-4 solid veteran players to go with whichever young ones do well this year AND get a proven winner for manager who won at a small to mid-size market club.
April 19, 2025 at 10:40 am #279853I think most teams would take Counsel and I sure would for the Cards, but that will never happen. I see top managers (maybe 5 or so good ones) like Counsel continuing to get paid big. Top managers don’t have as much value as some people think, but they do make the difference in a couple of games a year which is worth more than many RP.
Pat Murphy for the Brewers also looks really good. The Brewers must have a really good coaching development pipeline.
Unsure what Bloom will do with Marmol. I have a suspicion they will stick with him if this teams floats around .500 like they most likely will.
April 19, 2025 at 12:13 pm #279855Counsel’s a genuine Big League manager. The Cardinals have no use for him.
April 19, 2025 at 1:17 pm #279862Counsell is the highest paid manager in MLB history so I doubt he will be leaving the Cubs anytime soon.
The question is what will the Cardinals do with Marmol? Well he is under contract for 2026 so I think that answers your question. The Cardinals do not like to eat money so even if Bloom wanted to change I don’t know if BDW would approve it. I mean I know they have eaten some money in the past on managers but it doesn’t seem like something a transitioning team would do.
Whenever the time comes for Marmol to depart I imagine the names we will hear are Schumaker, Pujols, and Molina, assuming they are available. Maybe even Descalso.
April 19, 2025 at 1:45 pm #279864I’d say no chance on either Pujols or Molina. Schumaker would undoubtedly be a possibility, but I would guess Descalso would be the odds on favorite as the next Cardinal manager. And if the team were to really tank and be relegated to insignificant status by early June, I’d say there’s a good chance Descalso would finish the ’25 season as the Redbird manager.
April 19, 2025 at 6:01 pm #2798951TD, I think we will be insignificant way before mid June if we are not there now! Anything that will lead to Ollie dismissal is a plus! No one can take a reset seriously as long as he in the manager!
April 19, 2025 at 6:02 pm #279896Counsell’s contract runs through 2028, so we can probably table this discussion for four years, unless he is fired first.
April 20, 2025 at 9:31 am #279925The NLC has three real good skippers in Counsell, Murphy and Francona. Then there is our guy and the Pirates manager. Hard to say with teh Bucs as they have some nice young arms, but need that big middle order bat and a stronger ‘pen.
If we end up sub-.500 this year, I think Bloom will talk BDW into bringing in another guy, if Bloom has a guy he thinks can help. If no one he wants is available he will likely ride it out with Ollie and then make a change, assuming the club is still treading water after 2026.
April 20, 2025 at 9:54 am #279926I saw this at baseball reference:
Pythagorean W-L: 11-10, 99 Runs, 96 Runs AllowedSince our actual record is 9 – 12, that tells you what you already know, that you are losing most of the close games. Would a better manager make any difference? Over the course of a 162 game season, maybe five more wins and five less losses. Maybe 6?
Think how much in player salary a WAR of 5.0 would cost you, and 6.0, don’t ask, lol!!April 20, 2025 at 12:38 pm #279937Well last year we way outplayed our pythagorean record so it seems to balance out.
A few managers can truly make a difference but I will maintain until the very end that the Cardinals are in the situation they are in primarily because of front office and ownership malfeasance over the last decade.
April 20, 2025 at 1:37 pm #279950Well last year we way outplayed our pythagorean record so it seems to balance out.
We outplayed our pythagorean record by seven wins last year, over a 162 game schedule, with the most consistent closer in MLB, and quality setup man work to boot. That is about what one would expect. Pretty hard for a manager to screw up the sentence “put Helsley in there for the 9th”.
I’m not sure about Helsley, but the overall bullpen performance looks worse this season. I’m guessing this is the setup where a top notch manager could make a difference. It would go unnoticed, however, since it is the difference between winning 65 games and 75.
April 20, 2025 at 1:48 pm #279953I thought a Pythogorean was an extinct dinosaur…A plant eater?

Bullpens are notoriously fickle but the backend of our bullpen is still strong with Leahy, Maton, and Helsley. The rest of the bullpen has been much weaker. Not sure if that is the manager’s fault or not having much to work with. He doesn’t set the roster. I doubt it was his idea to do absolutely nothing all winter except add a $2M reliever.
April 22, 2025 at 10:35 am #280143The other thing I will say about replacing Marmol is that the timing does matter. The fact that we are a team in transition does matter. Does it make sense to bring in an elite manager when your roster isn’t ready to win? The Cubs didn’t bring in Joe Maddon until they were ready to win. Poor Dale Svuem and Rick Renteria got to manage them through their rebuild and then were kicked to the curb when the roster was ready. The same will probably happen in STL.
