Is he another who’s flying below the radar? Lefty hitting outfielder. Nothing to really rave about as far as power or speed, but seems like a steady ballplayer with an OBP close to .350 at Memphis this season. Can play all 3 OF positions. Decent #4 or #5 some day?

It is quite a coincidence to see this thread pop up as I had been considering Capel just this weekend. I had noticed that since his last substantial sample, 2019 in AA, he has doubled his BB rate, and it is enough of a sample then and this year to be meaningful.

I checked back to see his 2021 pre-season scouting report from Brian’s friends at Prospects Live. Their evaluator said:

“Shows a solid eye, but is too aggressive at the plate…Needs to learn to wait for his pitch” and concluding with “He has the underlying ability to improve with the stick, but he’s going to need to improve his approach”.

( That report also said his D, arm and speed are good and he can play all three OF positions ).

So my thinking is the doubled walk rate together with 30 point BA and 70 point OBP increase maybe means he is successfully making the adjustments he needed to make.

My concern would be the same as with any lefty hitter coming up, whether he hits to all fields effectively or will be hindered by the shift in MLB.

I think Capel is intriguing but he will have to overtake Noot and Burlseson to make the team next spring.

Burleson is in his first pro season and magically beamed up to AAA where he unsurprisingly faceplanted into a wall. I believe they call that maneuver the Zack Thompson. As of now he has shown not the slightest hint of crawling out of the crater. Hopefully next year he will be able to adapt to the higher level competition.

I think, but am not sure, Capel is eligible for the Rule 5 draft this winter. He may well be showing enough to attract the attention of an organization that is paying attention. I would not be at all surprised if the Cardinals fail to protect him since he is basically a singles hitter. That means his exit velocity and launch angle do no add up to anything that will light up Mo’s computer. Since everyone’s face is glued to their computer screen or radar gun he may well be flying under the radar as cranny wondered, and may well fly right on out the door this winter.

I don’t think so. Burleson earned his trip to AAA. There was nothing magical about it.

Thompson didn’t. He was placed in Memphis to justify his draft status.

Burleson was sure pushed hard. In this 1st season for him, he was promoted to Springfield after only 11 games at Peoria, then promoted again to Memphis after only 63 games at Springfield. How many Cardinal prospects have ever been pushed all the way up to AAA after only 74 professional games? Was that fair to him?

He had a .963 OPS at Peoria and an .822 OPS at Springfield so I think he earned the trip to Memphis. He has obviously struggled there but he should do better at AAA next year. He is only 22. I don’t have a problem with players earning an aggressive promotion. What I don’t like is when players are promoted aggressively for no apparent reason except someone sitting up in the front office wants to see it happen.
