So most of the same teams reportedly interested in Molina… The Cards probably wouldn’t win the bidding, though.

McCann will probably get a bigger contract than Molina so that would not make any sense for the Cardinals.

I thought at first…isn’t McCann really old? Then I realized that it’s a matter of James vs Brian. Lol

McCann is ascending. He is just the type of free agent you want to sign. Ahhhh…if it were only that simple.

There’s a good reason why the CWS signed Grandal to a 4/73mil contract the winter after their McCann made 102 GS at catcher, and earned an All-Star bench role.

Normally, I would say there’s zero chance that the Cardinals would win an auction with the Mets, Yankees, Angels, and even the Phillies involved. But if Molina goes to the Angels and Realmuto goes to the Mets, then we’re up against only two teams, the Yankees and the Phillies, and the Yankees might be looking for something that has a higher profile than McCann. So, as odd as it might seem, there’s the possibility that the Cardinals might be able to do do something here.

    Let’s think this through.

    A. The only way Yadi goes elsewhere is if the Cardinals are outbid by another team.

    B. Yadi is probably going to get less than McCann.

    C. Therefore, the only way this happens is if the Cardinals sign McCann for more money than Yadi gets elsewhere. Chalk me up as not believing that will happen. If Yadi goes elsewhere the Cardinals would sign a lower tier catcher to share duties with Knizer.

Nigel, the CWS identified McCann as best vs LHP’s, so signing Grandal as the everyday catcher was a good fit. It put McCann in a platoon role that best fits his handedness and the results were a career ops+.

Interesting contradiction by Derrick Goold in his chat today when asked about McCann.

“The Cardinals are not actively engaged in negotiations for any catcher other than Molina at the moment.”

He then proceeded into a long explanation why the Cardinals do not ever comment on the free agent market.

Then how can he be sure that the team isn’t talking with others?

    This is from CBS Sports:

The Yankees, Mets, Angels, Cardinals, and White Sox are among the teams showing interest in free-agent backstop James McCann, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. McCann, who has expressed a desire to join a team where he would be the No. 1 option behind the plate, entered the winter ranked as the No. 2 backstop available in our estimation, behind only J.T. Realmuto.

This may be repetitive but it seems we are hearing it more and more.

Count me as someone who doesn’t really like the idea of signing McCann to start. For the money they would have to pay him, I don’t see him being that much of an upgrade to Molina. McCann hits left handed pitchers well but not right handed pitchers. He will be 31 in June so he is not going to get much better and will more likely decline. He doesn’t advance the Cardinals enough to go that route. Use Knizner as the starter and use the money they would spend on McCann to upgrade somewhere else. (Even though that won’t happen)

FWIW, in Fangraphs’ rankings of the top 50 free agents across MLB this winter, Realmuto (#7) and McCann (#10) are it for catchers. (Yadi is no. 51).
