Amazingly this wasn’t reported by any one in the Cardinals media. Not a single beat writer reported this but its being reported on Twitter by random Cardinals fans. Carlos Martinez had a shoulder procedure done by Dr. Andrews to clean up his shoulder in hopes he’ll be able to start next season without pain.

It is great that the news was reported quickly by a person who happened to be in the right place at the right time with her cellphone camera. Though unless Martinez approved, which he perhaps did as she could be a friend, I would consider the distribution of the photos to be an invasion of his personal privacy. He was preparing for surgery, after all.
In defense of the beat writers, how would they know in advance unless someone tipped them off? The team is not at the ballpark for them to notice that someone is not there and no one is there to speak with. It is the off-season now, so I don’t find the source (or lack of sources) of this news to be all that amazing.
Based on the Instagram photos apparently taken at Andrews’ facility in Florida, it appears the random Twitter guy from the St. Louis area you cited above just grabbed two of her six IG photos and implied they were his own reporting. Weak sauce.

Being that they’re the beat writers I figured they have sources within the organization that would tip them off when something like this comes up. Also, its hard to believe that a procedure like this just happened on a whim and wasn’t planned out for a while. But ultimately, who knows. I just found it odd that none of the Cardinals writers knew this was happening.

I’m guessing that this takes Carlos out of the trade chip category. The Cards will want to see what he has at Spring training now.

It would seem that the timing of this surgery probably makes him less of a question mark rather than more. It was commented that this is about him being able to start next year. He had skipped the surgery last year to try to strengthen the shoulder and we saw how that worked out.

I agree. The fact that this procedure occurred in October is encouraging news. In years past this is the kind of thing the player or team would have waited until January or February to do. Hopefully he will be a starter next year.

Yep. Because let’s face it, Carlos at 100% is as good a starter as we are likely to find on the market with the exception of Cole or Strasburg. Durability will always be the question but he did average over 190 IP per season his first three years as a starter.

A healthy Martinez should be a big boost to the 2020 rotation. Let’s hope whatever was done does indeed bring him back to the pitcher he was a few years ago.

Getting cut on is definitely a risk, but the probability must’ve been low for Martinez to return to where he needs to be physically without the procedure.
During the season, when Martinez came in, my level of concern was highest when the size of the stain on his shoulder was largest – an indicator that suggested to me how much trouble he had getting loose.

Having a procedure done always comes with risk but I think it is encouraging that it happened so early in the offseason. He should have plenty of time to recover. My frustration in the past with Cardinal injuries stemmed from waiting and waiting and waiting then doing a procedure late in the offseason, which doesn’t make sense.
Yes its good the surgery was done early this offseason.I question Cmarts dedication and willingness to do whats needed to get back to 100% and to become the top level SP he is needed to be.Maybe this is a wakeup call for him and he realizes his seemingly laid back goofy attitude doesn`t cut it if he wants to be one of the best in the league.
The procedure was not clean up surgery. It was simply an injection to aid healing. Always good to get the facts out.

I’m still holding out hopes he’s traded to the Padres for Yates and Patino….. Saves the Cards $6M or so to add someone who can hit a baseball.
