15 position players, but only 14 pitchers. One more to come… Woodford if Gallegos is not ready?

stlcard25ParticipantThat’s an interesting group. Not often you see a team go with one less than the allowable number, and on opening day!
July 23, 2020 at 2:48 pm #133440I love having the expanded roster limits. I wish this was standard in a normal season as well – at least 27 or 28. Gives a manager much more flexibility to pinch hit, pinch run, and bring in guys when a game is a blowout. Not to mention getting through a lot of extra innings.
July 23, 2020 at 3:32 pm #133444stlcard25, they are still likely to add the final player tomorrow. As I wrote in the article, Gallegos is throwing today and they probably want to see how he responds before deciding.
July 23, 2020 at 5:17 pm #133449We already knew this, but that sure isn’t a very exciting group of OF’s…. Not a single name that you could guarantee will have a starting spot in a month.
July 23, 2020 at 7:30 pm #133463There is nothing behind them.

ParticipantMo’s made a huge bet on 3 outfielders rising to the occasion. But I can’t remember in the last 20 years when the OF was so unproven.
July 23, 2020 at 9:45 pm #133476Funny you should mention that…
“15” is Jim Edmonds’ old number. It is also the number of times in the last 20 years either he or Matt Holliday started in the #stlcards’ Opening Day outfield. That veteran OF continuity ended three years ago. pic.twitter.com/OxCixwbpiP

July 23, 2020 at 9:59 pm #133477In 2019, the #stlcards opened the season with seven relievers. Only two of them will be among the 10 in the bullpen to open the 2020 season – Andrew Miller and John Gant. That is turnover, folks…

ParticipantPlease tell me why JR is not in Springfield working on his command?
Someone in the front office must really, really like him to put him on the
opening day roster ahead of Woodford. How do you walk 7 of 8 batters, not finish
an inning and then be rewarded..??
Wow!July 24, 2020 at 7:52 am #133482That’s a hard one to figure for me, also. Maybe they’re thinking that Woodford needs innings which he wouldn’t be getting if on the 30 man roster. I doubt if Fernandez will pitch at all before the roster gets reduced to 28 men, unless it’s a mop up inning in a lopsided game.

ParticipantEither way you would be burning an option year for very little help to the Cards.
July 24, 2020 at 8:46 am #133493The burning an option year and at least as importantly, the team potentially losing a year before free agency on a short season is a concern for every player – no matter who is at the back end of the roster.
(I started to take this into a specific discussion about Carlson that better fits elsewhere so I moved it to the “Our Younger OFs” thread.)
July 24, 2020 at 11:11 am #133505Has the 30th roster spot been announced yet? If not, I would assume it would happen before first pitch tonight right?
July 24, 2020 at 11:38 am #133512No and yes, though they are not required to make that decision today. They could wait to bring Gallegos off the IL at any time, for example.
