ParticipantThought this might possibly be worthy of a thread, as we’re waiting for Spring training to re-start.
Below are the Cardinals who are listed by Wikipedia as inducted into the HOF in Cooperstown – as Cardinals. On the HOF website, they are listed as the Cardinals being their “primary team.” However, the ones in capital letters are the only ones to have a Cardinal logo on their cap in the “Hall of Fame Plaque Gallery”.
Jim Bottomley

DIZZY DEAN

Chick Hafey
Jesse Haines

BRUCE SUTTERApril 13, 2020 at 9:02 pm #126604Those no-logo guys that are in as players were guys who played when the team wore hats without logos. Dean played in that era as well so he must have a retro-fit hat style on his plaque.
Speaking of Diz, has anyone seen “Pride Of St. Louis”? Not a bad movie, but the uniforms they use are not authentic at all. It takes something away from the movie for me when the uni’s are not historically accurate.

ParticipantOn the HOF website, they also denote which team they spent the most time with.

April 15, 2020 at 5:07 pm #126769To bikemike’s movie inaccuracy point, that is Richard Crenna/Paul on the left Dan Dailey/Dizzy on the right. The team did not use the STL on caps until 1939-40. By that time Dizzy was a Cub.
April 16, 2020 at 5:51 pm #126819Since we were talking about Dizzy, here is a cool photo. I had to look it up, but his career-ruining broken big toe was on his left foot, the one that is as high as his head here.

April 16, 2020 at 6:50 pm #126823Good photos, Brian. Not only did the Cardinals not have hat logos when Diz was with them, but I do not believe they ever had the S-T-L horizontal like in the movie. It has always been interlocking.
Not sure where those hats come from. I believe the movie “The Winning Team”, about Grover Cleveland Alexander, had it wrong as well. They have the Cardinals in dark hats, whereas they wore white in those days. “The Winning Team” also gets the chronology all wrong.
While I am on a rant, “Brian’s Song”, about former Chicago Bear Brian Piccolo and his relationship with Gale Sayers also messes up the chronology. They sort of meld the years 1965 through 1967 and basically portray it as their rookie year (1965). The setting looks to be 1967, their third year as pro’s, but the movie leads you to believe they are in their rookie seasons.
April 16, 2020 at 7:15 pm #126825Actually, the Cards did use the block, non-interlocking STL with a square dot under the T on their road cap in 1940, as I noted above. Another source I rely on also says 1939, but I have not asked the Cardinals museum folks. The Hall of Fame is the source of this image and they show 1940 only. They have a very good Uniform Database.
Back to the movie depiction, if the logo is truly 1940 only, then both Deans were already gone by then. In 1940, Paul pitched for the Giants.

April 16, 2020 at 7:24 pm #126826Since you mentioned Alexander, here are the 1926 uniforms. I kind of like them. How about those pinstripes?
April 17, 2020 at 7:11 pm #126944Good call, Brian. I knew I should have checked the “Dressed to the Nines” display before commenting on the horizontal “STL”. I don’t recall seeing a photo of an actual player in those hats, but a quick internet search would probably find one.
I have always liked those white hats with the stripes and red bills. The Reds wore similar hats in the early ‘60s, but had a block letter “C” on them.
Those 1926 road uni’s are cool. I would have preferred the birds-on-bat on the home jerseys, which they had before ‘26 so they must have tried going without them in ‘26. In ‘27 they had those “World Champion” uni’s. I got a 3/4 length t-shirt designed sort of that way from the Cardinals HOF and Musuem last summer. That is the shirt I was wearing at the Houston Tri-Star show when Keith Hernandez saw me and said “I like that shirt.”
April 20, 2020 at 2:17 pm #127103The pick of Diz reminded me of my grand dad going nuts that nobody on on whatever research dept. for the movie didn’t know about the high leg kick that Daily, as a dancer could have pulled off.
The movie is awful in that respect but not quite as fulla bull as the Bendix Ruth (not that I don’t re-watch ’em both when they come on)
