An article in today’s local StL. paper leads with the headline, “Cardinals brass back in Capitol lobbying for sports betting in Missouri.” The aforementioned “brass” consists of Billy Jr’s. illustrious son and a couple of his cohorts. Why would they possibly do that? I’m entirely certain that more than a few of you can recall a time when if anyone even remotely connected to Big League baseball situated themselves to within a mile of anyone or anything associated with gambling they’d be universally ostracized quicker than you can say, “Rumpelstiltskin”…And that particular stance and course of action makes perfect sense in order to firmly maintain the credibility of an outcome of any contest. No question they’re going to legalize sports betting in Missouri in the near future, but in my view, it’s tacky and common for anyone associated with my favorite team to feel as though they need to jump down into the ditch and consign an envoy to speak to a political arena in order to be entirely certain that they further their cause. It turns my stomach and I’d be interested to know if anyone feels the same.

And I’ll also say, if you want a little extra action, simply make a call phone call to local handicapper. He needs the money a lot more than the owners do…Haha!

1tough, that $$$ train left the $tation long ago. For several years, BetMGM and DraftKings have been “co-exclusive Official Sports Betting Partners of MLB”, right up there with Budweiser, Chevrolet and all the others.

In addition to MLB official bourbon and red wine, they have an official “men’s health provider” (Roman). So, they aren’t missing a trick to spin a sponsorship buck.

I imagine all this additional revenue helps keep fan prices at the ballpark low… 😉

Yeah, I was somewhat aware of that setup, BW, but not the specific details. My primary gripe is, as I mentioned, there’s no question that the state of Missouri is going to legalize sports betting in the very near future and in my view it seems incredibly common for Billy Jr’s. son to make a trip to Jefferson City in order to hammer home a cause that is not only a foregone conclusion, but could also certainly be termed questionable.

Haha!…”Roman” These guys kill me…When I was in my early 20’s had a friend who was a swarthy and handsome looking Corsican who went by the name, Roman. He was quite the ladies man and I hung out with him quite a bit simply for a chance at a little runoff from the extensive members of his stable. Back then, I didn’t require any “health provider”…Haha!

Regarding the State lobbying, my guess is that when you are partners, you support each other.

In this ranking by market cap of all gaming companies in the world, MGM is #4 and DraftKings is #10. Together, they are worth over $25 billion.

Wow, $25 billion, ehh? With that kind of dough they could hire Willie and The Mick as goodwill ambassadors…

There are no sacred cows anymore. For years it was thought that no professional league would ever enter the Las Vegas market due to the gambling association but of course the NHL and NFL are now there and MLB will be as soon as the A’s and the league finally give up on Oakland.

Since gambling is now mainstream perhaps Pete Rose should be reinstated.

It sure brings Rose’s case to the forefront again. But he admitted betting on his own team as the manager, a role in which he could directly affect the outcome. That is a pretty firm line to have crossed. Though lots of others less defined have already been broken, what Rose did then is still very much against the rules today. Hence the Commissioner refusing to reinstate him as recently as last year.

Oh I know. My comment was mostly in jest but I am beginning to wonder how far the envelope will be pushed.

When big money is involved, anything is possible, I guess…

As I had mentioned on another thread previously, one big reason Bally bought the naming rights for the RSNs is that they had been developing an in-game, on-screen betting app. You can bet that if (when) MLB gets control of the telecast rights, they will develop their own betting app and cut out the middleman. Or maybe they will introduce it with one of their partners to create the impression of being somewhat distanced from it. Still, we are not far away from seeing a variety of betting options in real time during games, like it or not.

Maybe they will charge extra for the same channel without gambling. Then they could make something more even off those who don’t want to bet… 😉

I am looking forward to Roman night at the ballpark. (Think seat cushion night)

Of the four major American professional team sports, I’d say that Big League baseball is far and away the silliest and most inane sports wagering proposition. I’d also say that anyone who is at all practiced in the art of handicapping knows this to be the case and that most gamblers who imagine themselves to realize some sort of profit steer entirely clear of the proposition. I base this view on the precise same reasons that are the reasons that I happen to find watching Big League baseball to be so incredibly exciting and entertaining. The fact is that it’s entirely unpredictable and almost anything can happen at any time to change the final outcome of a contest. And more times than not, when the seemingly impossible does indeed happen, it happens in a big hurry. I’d also say that anyone who loses their hard earned money as a result of wagering on baseball should never utter nary a complaint about their loss. My dad used to use a phrase to drive home a point to both my younger brother and myself and that phrase was, “If you’re going to be a sucker, be a quiet one.”

Yeah, gambling has gone mainstream. KM Landis would ban Cardinal ownership from the game if he heard that representatives were lobbying for legalized gambling in their state.

I watch a fair amount of streaming content, and there is not a show on that does not have a BetMGM ad come on within the first ten minutes.

But it is yet another revenue stream, so MLB will go all out and take it as far as possible. It does water down Pete Rose’s ban. Had he just bet on other games besides his own club he would likely be in.
