The Cardinals announced Monday that they’ve claimed left-hander Packy Naughton off waivers from the Angels. The Cards had one open spot on the 40-man roster, which is now full.
March 21, 2022 at 3:08 pm #181131Numbers were ok in the low minors. Had a year wiped due to covid and then was in AA-AAA then promoted to LAA for a few games. Ranked #12 prospect in Angels organization in 2020 and #19 for 2019

NaughtonScouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 50 | Overall: 45
A ninth-round pick in 2017 out of Virginia Tech, Naughton had a strong first summer as a pro in rookie ball, but delivery and command issues had the left-hander coughing up too many hits in 2018 with Dayton in the Midwest League, 168 of them over 154 innings. Much of those issues came as he tried to figure things out and make adjustments to his game. Those adjustments paid dividends by the end of the season and continued into 2019. The Angels liked what they saw enough to acquire him in the Brian Goodwin deal at the 2020 Trade Deadline.
Naughton was more prepared with a plan for opposing hitters in the Florida State League and later at Double-A Chattanooga. Some of that success came because he found ways to use all of his pitches. His stuff doesn’t wow people, but it’s still considered a good enough three-pitch mix where he has the feel for his fastball (87-94 mph), slider and changeup. Having good movement and deception will always be key for him to be successful.
Considered a cerebral pitcher, Naughton has shown something he couldn’t do as well in 2018: the ability to get out of trouble. He also fields his position well and is pretty athletic. He still has a chance at being a No. 5 type starter or middle reliever.
March 21, 2022 at 3:34 pm #181137Thanks for sharing that, Booyah, but please also name the site the report came from and provide a link so the source gets credit for their work. Much appreciated.

ParticipantIt’s ok 858booyah, I thought you just knew all that stuff. Some crazy names and stuff. I saw on tik tok this team that is named the Savanna bananas. I don’t know if it’s independent or whatever. They even do weird tik tok things while coming to the plate or pitching and have banana colored baseball bats and skirts as part of uniform. Really crazy.

stlcard25ParticipantThis move signals a couple of things, to me:
1) The Cards are satisfied with their pitching depth, which I’m not sure is much better than last season’s.
2) With the extra playoff spot, the team is now probably aiming for 85ish wins rather than 88 like before. The Reds, Pirates and Cubs will be bad enough that it wouldn’t be surprising if both Milwaukee and St Louis won 92+ just due to the weak schedules. Neither team would win 85 in the other two divisions, IMO.
March 21, 2022 at 7:25 pm #181144Seems kind of odd that he would be DFAd. Anyone know how many teams would have passed on him before the Cards got a chance?
March 21, 2022 at 7:25 pm #181145STLCard25, we need a LIKE button, well said.
March 21, 2022 at 7:28 pm #181146Though I hate to say it, the Scrubs are going to be better than expected. Much better off season.
March 21, 2022 at 7:29 pm #181147his move signals a couple of things, to me:
To me it signals that we are soon to either have somebody go on the 60DL, or get traded, or get DFAd. Something to open a spot back up on the 40 man.

cardsfan64ParticipantMy guess is that Reyes will be put on the 60-day if they need a spot on the 40 man roster.
Thanks for the info, booyah!March 21, 2022 at 11:41 pm #181151Reports say he hás 2 options left. It looks tô me that he should have 3.

-If true, Mo should be immediately fired.
-cubbies should finish in the neighborhood of 75 victories, Card4Ever…..give or take 3 games.
-I know absolutely nothing about this Packy fellow except one sure thing…..he most assuredly is a flamboyant character of sorts. One cannot have a name such as “Packy” and be otherwise. Too bad Packy wasn’t a footballer, as I’d love to see him playing in the green & gold.
