The cardinals have always been good about easing young players in because they realize when a players skills are dimenishing. Basically a Thank you for what you’ve done for us but we have this young talent in triple a and we’d like to see what he can do… Don’t worry though,you’ll still get playing time just not as much and you will forever be a part of our Cardinal team. As i say that I wonder why we are not doing that with our catching situation? Molina is no longer the presence he once was behind home plate and runners arent afraid to run on him as they once were.
Molina seems pretty darned good to me and all the other teams and players too.
His defense may be a bit less than what it was, but his defense before was better than everyone else in the league by a lot. Now he is only top 3-5 in the league which is not something you find excuses to replace with hopes and dreams in other prospects who cant do anything he does currently as well as him.
With his ability to make good contact (not many k’s) and decent power and top 5 defense to go along with potentially still being the best game caller and on-field manager while still scaring runners from running with his arm I see no reason to even consider moving on from him.
He has two more years on his contract and has very good years for all of it so far.
Should his offense go down dramatically, or his defense suffer so much that it is a detriment then you can consider platooning him…but that hasnt happened yet despite the desire for that to happen by many people because it SHOULD be happening because of what has happened to other players
He is a HOFer and a generational player and potentially all time greatest level catcher in baseball
Until he shows he needs replacing then you dont do it. Especially for a team that needs everything that he still offers.
I think you must’ve misread my post… I was praising Molina for being one of the best catchers the game has seen but he wont be around forever so why not let a young catcher learn from one of the games best so when the switch is made,he’ll be ready. Besides Molina is not the best game caller not even for our team. Look at the numbers… Starting Era, Bullpen Era are lower when Pena and Kelly catch. On average strikeouts are up and walks are down. And explain why is it that in the 5 starts as Pena being the Catcher while molina was on the dl Micholas and Wacha,and Weaver gave up less runs,less hits, and more K’s in their combined 4-5 starts than they have their 2 starts since Molina has come off the Dl. I know announcers say their missing their spots…. Ya,ok…. They miss their spot with Molina but didn’t miss their spot in those 5 games with Pena. Read that sense out loud and tell me if that makes sense.

I will take the years of MOlina’s experience, not to mention all the games BEFORE he got hurt where our rotation was even better than it was when he went down over whatever Pena has shown in his brief partial month fill in
Also, the Cardinals tried to do what you are saying with Molina…with KElly..and not only did Kelly not perform but the team was attacked for wasting Kelly behind Molina despite him not playing well when he could play and not hitting when he had opportunities..and when Molina DID go down and he DID get an opportunity he did nothign and was forced out by Pena at best a career backup catcher
Why would you force playing time with Kelly over Molina when he doesnt perform as well as Molina in any way, especially on a team that not only needs stability behind the plate but also offensively?
They have options for when Molina breaks down to the point of him not being good enough…and they have two different types even…a hitter first option in Knizner and Kelly who seems farther ahead defensively than offensively…
When Molina came up he was defense only and they hadnt been grooming him as a backup for years behind Matheny…they coached him up let him work every day in the minors and when they called on him..he arrived ready to go and hasnt missed a beat since
maybe we should trust the way this organization deals with catchers…seeing as we have had some of the best
man this thread seems incredibly trollish after a game in which he accounted from every rbi and had 2hrs…yadier molina is not going anywhere, unless he is hitting 150 he will get the majority of the starts, he will get 2k hits, and retire a cardinal and an hof… hell if he keeps hitting for power he might change his mind about retiring to try to get a one yr contract if still healthy to 200hrs, and the cardinals will prob give it to him. I dont know how anyone can not see this…

Yadi provides intangibles – overall leadership on the field.
Plus his tenacity and drive rub off on other players.Yadi has the experience and credibility of a veteran but don’t underestimate Carson Kelly as a leader. (I still think we should trade Kelly though).
If he can start hitting at MEM his value will go up… if it doesn’t, Molina wins and Kelly becomes a AAAA catcher. That’s a long way down from being the #1 catching prospect. The organization sabotaged his career.
His hitting at Memphis is the same as it was last year. Was he “sabotaged” last year as well? He hasn’t performed at the MLB level and likely isn’t as good as Yadi right now, anyway. I think it’s pretty unfair to say that he’s ruined simply because he hasn’t immediately been given the keys to the team while a potential future Hall of Fame player still has plenty left in the tank.
A former elite catching prospect playing at AAA and given very little time at MLB to prove himself, and this for four years is sabotage. I hope he is traded to a team in the NLC and comes back to haunt you.
ps. no matter how well Kelly plays at Memphis it all means nothing and is for naught!!
pss. YM ain’t that good and he has a leak in that tank of his, yadi-worshipper.Lol, I’m not a Yadi worshipper. I just happen to think the guy who’s putting up nearly the same wRC+ with the big league club that his heir is in AAA deserves the benefit of the doubt. It’s not like his defense has fallen off a cliff either. With injuries, the likelihood that Yadi will have more days off when Matheny is replaced, etc…Kelly will get his shot. There are plenty of players who wait for a couple of years and don’t wither on the vine. If Carson is as good as advertised…he won’t either.
Anyway, sorry that you’re so bitter about all of this. If Carson is a relative of yours…my apologies.
