Yeah, that 2004 team was the best Cardinal team of the last 50 years. And they just might have gotten the ring had Chris Carpenter been available for the post season. In my tournament I made no such penalties as I wanted to represent the teams as they were constructed throughout the season, thus Carpenter pitched regularly in the tourney.

That trade of JD Drew helped deepen the pitching in ’04, as we had plenty of offense. I was all in favor of that deal when we made it. Then I felt we kind of un-did it some the next year when we made the deal for Mark Mulder. I hated that trade, but will say one of my main gripes about the deal was giving up Daric Barton, and he never did as well as I thought he would. And that is a great point about Ankiel. Had he developed into the kind of pitcher he appeared to be when he first came up, it would have been almost unfair.

Yes, I had such great hopes for him and when he finished his rookie year, I would have bet that he would have gotten a Cy Young or two in his career. He ended up being a decent OF but that was hardly the best case scenario when he entered the big leagues.

Oh my how did I miss this thread? I’ve pretty much been in hibernation this winter, but still should have seen this earlier. A fun thread, BicycleMike! Hope you play it again next winter.

Thanks Pugs. Hope you enjoyed the write-ups on the home page.

Yeah, I saw Ankiel pitch out here early in his second season. I thought I was watching a future Sandy Koufax. The guy really was special.
