3: something else?It is probably not wise to assume that Sosa’s first 38 plate appearances this season will be his career norm. But there is plenty of time as none of the items above are likely to happen any time soon.
The last full season, 2019, Sosa had a very good year offensively. Coming through the system, he’s hit .283 in over 2,000 plate appearances. He’s no fluke. He has some talent.
Many players with minor league success made strong MLB debuts, but once the league figured them out, they could not sustain. It is way too early to tell for Sosa, especially to the extent that he might put DeJong out of a job.
For example, Sosa has far fewer MLB PAs than did Lane Thomas when the outfielder shot onto the radar in 2019, and you were quick to dismiss that. It could be a similar thing here. Only time will tell.
Sosa has some skills that make you want to give him some time to see how he adapts as opposing pitchers look for weaknesses. But obviously time will tell. If Sosa hits and fields well enough to where DeJong does not play much when he comes off the DL, I would like to see the club release Carpenter, and thus have a stronger bench.
But I am not sure how much either guy has played at other positions.

Elevated fan expectations are bound to follow when the team’s top baseball exec compared him to Albert Pujols while he was still a minor leaguer.
