Turning Baseball Heaven into Baseball Hell is a feat of Biblical proportions.
Is that going to be Mr. DeWitt’s legacy? Is it already a done deal?
The depth and breadth of the organization’s problems have been coming into focus, even for the most ardent bandwagon riders. Does anyone think The Cardinals is a dream destination right now? That leads to questions like who can help and why would they come here? Would they be able to and allowed to help if they did come? Would they be shot on sight?
Regulars around this board know what I think about things already so I’m not going to rehash any of it. This thread is a place to talk about the situation beyond the team on the field and what nifty new ways might we arrange the furniture.
A couple years ago, the FO spent a lot of effort in the period leading up to and including spring training, and even early in the year, raking Indy ball rosters and piles of NDFAs, other miscellaneous unemployed players, all for the purpose of filling in rosters on our mid and upper level squads. I remember thinking to myself: Fill in? Where did everybody go? I still wonder about that.
Someday, somebody will write a book. Mike Schildt maybe. He was around the organization a long time. Oquendo. I’d like to know what differences Pujols saw after being gone 10 years, but I kind of think he was here on a different level, just having fun and taking his hacks. A lot of other guys would be good too. I’ll read it whenever it comes out. Meanwhile, I think some folks in the present ownership/front office circle better vote themselves into the HoF while they’ve got the chance.
I don’t know ZTR. Theo can put together an MLB squad that does well for a short time. If you are a franchise that hasn’t won in forever and you are desperate, he is your man. But I hope we don’t go that route. I don’t want to win once and then turn to shyt for 5 years.
Theo is a quick fix guy who likes to spend a lot of money. Not BDW’s style.
Funny you mention Shildt writing a book bling. I was thinking the same thing the other day. His firing is still incredibly mysterious and has obviously turned out to be a mistake. I am not saying he would ever be my top choice in a vacuum but he is probably as good as we will ever get if we have to have an internal rookie. He was a Cardinal lifer who knew the organization inside and out. Kind of like the Braves manager. I would be in favor of bringing him back but we all know that won’t happen.
It seems to me that because we have been good for so long, but just not quite over-the-top good, we have consistently made decisions for the short-term.
We are now several years down the road, and in what was the “long term” back then, with talent that would be good to have today playing elsewhere. The younger talent we have is still more “potential” than “production”.
But it is mind boggling how we went from 93 wins to the worst team in the league (so far), with largely the same roster. Maybe having Molina, Pujols, Maddux and Albert on board really made that much difference. But I suspect it is more a case of everything going wrong at once, and we will be better. Still though, if we will get better, when? Every day you think the turnaround will start, and to date it has not happened.
Winning today or even a 4-2 week won’t even scratch the surface at this point.
Crappy teams have good week or even two week stretches.
It’ll take a 30-15 run over the next 7-8 weeks to get back to even for the season or another 17 game winning streak…..

How many games would we have won if we had not traded away our starting center fielder and a serviceable AAA starter? Traded for two starters, one of which is gone, and the other will be after this year. Meanwhile we are still struggling with center field, and seem to have now settled on a platoon hitter everyday because of the defense, and we are still desperate for starters and will be even more so next year. I do not think it is mind boggling. Smoke and mirrors only lasts so long.
It’s mind boggling to me. I can see us being say .500 or so. But to go to the worst team in the league – we’ll, I never thought that would happen over a 6 week stretch.
We traded our center fielder, but at least for now that deal has actually been a good one. Or at least it is helping in an area of need, starting pitching. It did mess up the outfield some, as no one, other than maybe Nootbaar of late, has stepped up and been good.
Well they need to start today and win.
They need to first a foremost WIN AN OPENING GAME OF A SERIES. Then you start taking series and hopefully things work themselves out eventually. Should never be a focus of going on some winning streak to get some swagger back.
It’s always been my thought to not worry about the teams in front of you and just you want you have to do. The rest will work itself out one way or another.
It’s much more complex then what I say but really get a win today, win a series and keep trying to take series. They have work to do. Let’s see if they show some grit the next few weeks and trying and slowly gain some ground.
