I just read an article that said he’s not worked a big league game since early April. Has he retired? Or just being phased out by MLB?
Either way, he was/is just about the worst ump in the game, along with C.B. Bucknor and Laz Diaz. So if he’s gone I think that’s good for baseball.

May 15, 2023 at 6:34 pm #220577He is supposedly injured and will return when healthy.
October 3, 2023 at 2:52 pm #235134I searched and found this old thread.
It’s my understanding that Angel Hernandez is no longer employed by MLB.
Can anyone confirm or deny?
October 3, 2023 at 3:17 pm #235136I saw a couple things on social media to the effect he was out as of the end of the regular season. But nothing that I recognized as a reliable source.
October 3, 2023 at 4:12 pm #235139Umpires named Hernandez don’t count…The solitary Hernandez I acknowledge is the one that played 1B for the St. Louis, Cardinals. He was pretty good. In fact, I think he’s unquestionably the greatest defensive 1B’man that I’ve seen many times in a seat somewhere beyond TV. He could hit too. Just as good or better than both Grace and W. Clark. He also had the biggest RBI base hit of the entire ’82 WS in the 6th inning of the 7th game. At the time I thought Hernandez, Andujar and Hendrick should have been in line for WS MVP in that order, but I had no problem seeing Simmon’s replacement take the award. At any rate, I’ll never forget that team led by a Redbird field manager who came from KC and took it all to the bank in StL.
October 5, 2023 at 12:38 pm #235250It’s funny.
When I saw Doug Eddings was one of the umpires for the Marlins/Phillies series I said outloud to myself that he is one of the worst homeplate umpires there is. And sure enough, he was really bad behind homeplate last night.
October 5, 2023 at 4:35 pm #235259So, should MLB start doing electronic balls and strikes since we now have that technology available? I originally thought ‘No…. because umpires are part of the game.’ But, this past season there seemed to be game-changing bad calls by umpires happening frequently. Then, you have to wonder if the bad calls hurt the pitcher more, or whether they hurt the batter more. And, in the end, does it all even out so that, when the pitcher gets hurt by a bad call, it is offset by the batter getting hurt by a bad call somewhere during the game, and vice versa? For sure, no matter if it’s the visiting team or the home team that gets the bad call, fans watching hate seeing it.
October 5, 2023 at 5:14 pm #235260ABS is coming, but not in 2024.
October 5, 2023 at 6:40 pm #235264It’s amazing. How well baseball has done while getting ruined by bad calls for 100 years. I agree something needs to be done before it’s to late.
October 5, 2023 at 9:14 pm #235274With ABS there would be no skirmishes with the umpire, no
arguments, no dirty looks, no tossing the bat, no complaining, no tempers flaring, no player getting ejected, no manager getting ejected, no anger or frustration by fans…. nothing like that. It would all be very clinical.October 5, 2023 at 9:34 pm #235276I think it’s a wonderful idea to remove as much human interaction from the game of baseball that is humanly possible…
October 6, 2023 at 5:11 pm #235316It looks to me like all the teams that should be in the 2023 playoffs are there. Bad calls by umpires didn’t prevent any of them from getting to the playoffs.
October 7, 2023 at 12:15 am #235326I read WWE SmackDown had monster ratings this summer, so maybe bad human officiating is the way to go. Taking it a step further, can you imagine a pregame lineup card exchange ending with Oli Marmol slapping a figure-four leg lock on a wailing C.B. Bucknor? That would re-define Mo’s understanding of the word “amazing.” Think of the fan interest that would generate.

October 13, 2023 at 4:58 pm #235678There were some very close calls on balls and strikes in that 9th inning. If any of those pitches that were called a strike had been called a ball, the outcome might have been different. Give the umpire credit for doing a good enough job under extreme pressure. And regardless of how any of the umpires performed, in my opinion, the team that played the hardest and deserved the win the most was the team that won.
