June 3, 2025 at 11:54 am #283863Yaxson Alberto Lucena. He’s 17 now, and poised to put up some lofty numbers. I’d love to see him jettisoned to Palm Beach this summer……the kid will be ready.
June 3, 2025 at 7:07 pm #283889Pugs, really curious how you chose Yaxson Lucena to expect a breakout from? There is hardly any info on the young man and he didn’t perform well last year.
June 3, 2025 at 7:27 pm #283901Rainel Rodriguez said new level, no problem and hit a 2 run his 1st PA in Palm Beach.
June 3, 2025 at 7:56 pm #283917Read an article on him a few weeks ago, Albert. Still trying to find it. I’m expecting big things from him this year and especially next season when he really settles in.
June 3, 2025 at 7:58 pm #283920Lynch tattooed by a Nooty liner. He’s taking it pretty darn good. I’d be on the turf yelping like a baby if that were me. Infield leadoff hit for the Nootster.
June 3, 2025 at 7:59 pm #283923Oops wrong thread
June 3, 2025 at 8:09 pm #283930Leonardo Bernal has been on fire since May. Another HR tonight which puts him at 8 since the start of May. He started out a little slow in AA, but that wasn’t unexpected for a guy who just turned 21 in AA. It is more surprising how well he has been playing since May though as you don’t expect someone his age to do so well.
June 3, 2025 at 11:37 pm #283988Forgive my piggybacking on your comment, Albert.
Leonardo Bernal since the 8th of May is batting .356/.415/.699 (7 homers) with 8 walks and just 8 strikeouts across 82 trips to the plate. Needless to say, that combo of imposing power and elite contact is exceedingly rare in a hitter young for his league, even over a relatively short stretch of games. I don’t know if it’s any rarer to be achieved by a switch-hitter, but it’s certainly nice that Leo bats from both sides. Anybody for a fat Ted Simmons?
June 4, 2025 at 8:11 am #283998Bob – You were a huge Bernal backer a couple years back when we were doing year-end prospect ratings. Thus far, Bernal looks like a potential future star. I could see he and Pages in a 70/30 (70 for Bernal) timeshare tandem in the future. That likely leaves Crooks, who is also a very good prospect, as trade bait.
The only negative I have on Bernal is his blocking is still a little troublesome. I don’t want him as catcher when Pallante is spiking deathballs.
June 4, 2025 at 11:55 am #284008The #stlcards system was 2-3 on Tuesday. TCN's Player of the Day is Springfield C Leonardo Bernal, who was 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and three RBI. Other standouts include Matt Koperniak, Max Rajcic, JJ Wetherholt, and Sammy Hernandez. https://t.co/jE3InBpGxB pic.twitter.com/izsSPu2Cqo

June 4, 2025 at 4:34 pm #284029Thanks for the kind word, Jnevel.
I was probably the high man on Bernal, that’s true. Also at various times high man on Rainiel Rodriguez and Daric “weirdest career” Barton and Andrew Knizner and Yadi Molina and Bryan Anderson and Carson Kelly and Eli Marrero and Ivan Herrera and Jimmy Dale Crooks III and probably Pedro Pages a few years back. When it comes to farmhands, I’m a sucker for Cardinal catchers when they hit and aren’t too old.I could see the Bernal/Pages arrangement you suggest, roughly 70/30. The real question is, would that be history’s heftiest catching combo? And would Marmol somehow be forced to play Leo Bernal at second base for a game due to his incompetence, as happened with Pages this year?
June 4, 2025 at 5:54 pm #284034If the goal is to win the game, putting Pages at 2B that game was downright criminal. Even though they had no 2B options, Siani was on the bench and he’s at least athletic. Pages was never going to get to a ball more than 1 step to his left or right, let alone cover a base in the event of a double play. However, if the goal of baseball is to be entertaining, the whole idea of having Pages play 2B was whimsically comical and certainly entertaining. I’ll always remember the game where Kyle Lohse got to play LF, the game when Oquendo caught, the games where Forsch got subbed out temporarily as a pitcher and went into the outfield for a few lefty hitters, the game Pujols pitched, the game Yadi pitched, and that one time that Pedro Pages played an errorless game at second base.
June 5, 2025 at 9:38 am #284051The #stlcards system was 2-1 on Wednesday. TCN's Player of the Day is Springfield pitcher Tekoah Roby, who threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk while striking out eight. Other standouts include Leonardo Bernal and Cade McGee. https://t.co/AFPYZU4LGk pic.twitter.com/vumhuU99Fu

June 5, 2025 at 10:17 am #284052I imagine Roby is looking at a promotion to AAA by the end of the month. He has been pitching great. I’m curious what they do with him innings limit wise as he threw 104 innings in 2022, but then due to injuries only threw 58 innings in 2023 and 38 innings in 2024. He is at 47 already on the year. I wonder if they let him get to 110-120ish which would get him close to a 150 IP growth next year. That is a big jump from the prior 2 years, but maybe counterintuitively having him pitch more and regularly all year can help him stay healthy and build up strength.
June 6, 2025 at 8:47 am #284182The #stlcards minor league system was 6-1 on Thursday. TCN's Player of the Day, Peoria shortstop Miguel Villarroel, was 3-for-5, including a stolen base, a run scored, and two RBI. Other standouts include Thomas Saggese, Ryan Shreve, and JJ Wetherholt. https://t.co/Sxgij3vSTl pic.twitter.com/pSthe5nyhJ

June 6, 2025 at 11:42 am #284183I’m wondering if they will leave Roby in AA till the first half is over. Springfield has a two game lead in that league and winning a playoff spot, having a place for some folks to experience postseason baseball would be good. Plus building a culture experienced with winning.
I’m unsure when the 2nd half starts. In AAA, the first half ends June 22. I’d think it would be the same for Texas League, but I’m not sure.
June 6, 2025 at 11:44 am #284185Ian Petrutz had a very nice game yesterday for Peoria, and since mid-April the 22-year-old outfielder is hitting .348/.463/.551. Very impressive, right? But my favorite part, during this protracted hot streak he’s only fanned 7 times in 109 trips to the plate (and 14 walks).
I don’t wanna get everyone’s hopes up too high, but he looks like he could be one of those Plate Discipline Guys, like Matt Carpenter, Nootbaar, Donovan, who wildly exceeds his draft position and prospect ranking.
Maybe someone out there has seen him play and can offer insight on the glovework?
June 6, 2025 at 8:02 pm #284221Petrutz is interesting. From his numbers last year, here is how a robo scout would rate him in terms of offense.
Raw Power – 50
Game Power – 40 or 35
Plate Discipline – 60
Bat Control – 55Where Petrutz is horrible is the launch angle. He was simply a ground ball machine and that limits him from even hitting that many doubles. He is showing some improvement at least in terms of fly ball rates this year, but since he is at A+ and minors statcast data isn’t available there, I can’t say what the LA has been so far. Petrutz GB/FB rate was 2.63 last year (horrible) and 1.45 this year which isn’t bad. He likely has made some improvements to at least give himself a chance to be more than a slap hitter as he does have good raw power.
He has been doing well though and is creeping up my list. Not super high, but if he can get to 20 HR power (his raw power) then he is viable for a corner OF spot.
June 6, 2025 at 8:16 pm #284223Tuning into the Memphis game during the Cards rain delay. Mathews is looking much better tonight. He still isn’t quite as sharp as he was last year, but it is much better than what I saw him at earlier this year.
June 7, 2025 at 9:03 am #284301The #stlcards system was 4-2 on Friday. TCN's Player of the Day is Memphis LF Mike Antico, who was 3-for-4 with two RBI.
