I was following the Spgf Cards game on game day. Marilyn already described the bottom of the ninth and I was sweating it out as it unfolded. Love got two out but gave up a run and left with bases loaded. Mgr Anderson went with Mason Burns and that turned out to be the right move…. but Burns made it very scary. He had a 1-2 count on the #2 batter Ehrhard (.272) and then threw one in the dirt and another ball that was just low and inside followed. So there it was….. bottom of the ninth score at 3-1 with the bases loaded in the first game of the best of three series on the line. Burns rears back and gets a swinging strike 3. Very exciting game.
Kudos to Henderson…. six scoreless frames GS=75. Harris, Baez and Gazdar all had two hits and each had an RBI.
The series goes to Springfield for game 2 & game 3 (if nec.). The S-Cards have given their fans plenty to cheer about all season and I’ll be surprised if they don’t take Tulsa in game 2 tomorrow night with Mautz on the mound….. Great stuff.

Mathews’ walks at Memphis continue to be a massive issue. There’s serious question as to whether he will be able to get big league hitters out as a starter. That 7.1 BB/9 is going to crush him unless he cuts it in half or more. He did the same thing at Memphis last year. Sadly, he’s looking like another prospect arm who won’t make it into the starting rotation long term. 4.5 BB/9 seems to be about the upper limit of where a starter can be even effective, and that would require some great sequencing luck (so not likely over a career, but maybe for a season).

Nice job by Springfield. They were leaking oil a couple of weeks back, but seem to have righted the ship. It would be nice to have enough time to line up Henderson and Mautz again. That’s a formidable duo to head a rotation.
As for Memphis, Curtis Taylor seems like the type to get a late season call to start a game as a reward for his good year. I hope he gets his cup of tea in St Louis this year, at a minimum.
There’s plenty of options to remove from the 40 man to make a spot. So, harder but not really difficult, if they want to.

The ability to throw it by lower level hitters doesn’t justify writing a guy into the future rotation, to the bewilderment of Mo’s PD staff, and a lot of other people.

Other teams somehow manage to put together a big league rotation of guys they develop. The average MLB pitcher today “throws it by” hitters on the regular, so it’s a usable strategy. It hasn’t worked for Mathews or just about any Cardinal lately. Perhaps the draft strategy of trying to collect more velocity from pitchability types will just never work. The entire minors pitching pipeline has seemed to be under a curse for about 10 years now.

It’s always sad when the baseball season winds down and ends. Of course, there’s the AFL, and the majors season isn’t quite over. But I do enjoy seeing the recaps and highlights from our prospects as well. Hopefully Springfield can finish up with a title in the next few days.
It sure is, 25. The last out of the season is not unlike saying farewell to a close friend and knowing you won’t see them for quite a while. I always know I’m going to miss the nice and easy everyday routine of the games, box scores, standings, etc. And then I think of darkness at 4 pm and shoveling the driveway as my backside freezes in Feb…Haha! Gimme some baseball and the good ol’ summertime!
Memphis finished their season with a win. JJ Wetherholt had a homer in the game. He wasn’t great down the stretch, but finished over .300 at Memphis with an OPS in the upper .900s.
Springfield had a 3-1 lead when they handed it off to the bullpen and they just imploded. 6-3 was the final score. Hopefully they will turn it around.
