My feed is filled with posts recounting the hitting exploits of JJ Wetherholt. That's great, but you know what I am excited about? The #STLCards' no. 1 prospect and TCN's July Player of the Month made his professional debut at third base today. Think about that… pic.twitter.com/NT5SIhHEwN

August 3, 2025 at 8:01 pm #289536Brian, that is absolutely fantastic seeing Wetherholt played 3B. I hope to see how his arm holds up as pre-draft scouts were unsure on the arm, but seem to think it is more average now. Great game by Wetherholt as well. This guy is really exciting and hitting his stride.
I am curious if they call him up in September. With the new prospect promotion incentives, I feel it kind of actually discourages September callups for top prospects like Wetherholt. If they were to call him up, he would no longer be eligible to net the team a prospect promotion incentive pick I believe. I would wait and have him Opening Day on the roster which also keeps the 40 man spot free in the offseason until guys can be added to the 60 day IL in mid Feb.

stlcard25ParticipantWell, at least the folks that keep slotting him in as the opening day 3B have some evidence that he’s actually played there.

My understanding is that he would still be eligible in 2026 as long as he has less than 60 days of MLB service time coming into next year.
(However, I am just answering your question. I am not pushing for JJ to be rushed up now.)
August 3, 2025 at 10:20 pm #289552I had been hoping they would give Wetherholt some reps at 3B.
August 4, 2025 at 7:19 am #289564The #STLCards system was 2-2 on Sunday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Springfield SP Cade Winquest, fired 5 ⅓ strong innings with seven Ks for his first Double-A win. Other standouts include JJ Wetherholt, Jimmy Crooks, Alex Cornwell, Michael Watson and Hunter Hayes.… pic.twitter.com/dd9vQtI9aE

stlcard25ParticipantFeels like someone had to put their finger on the scale to get Winquest POTY there. 2 runs in 5-1/3 is a 3.37 ERA on the game level. Wetherholt or Crooks over Winquest, for sure.
August 4, 2025 at 5:01 pm #289600There are a few reasons not to call JJ up this year. One of them being using up a 40 man spot over the winter when you don’t have to.
August 4, 2025 at 5:10 pm #289605I agree GScottar. I’d prefer to hold onto that spot. Wetherholt only has had a month of AAA. Another 6 weeks won’t hurt. This is his first long season of baseball in his career. Let him play in out in the minors and then bring him up if he looks good in Spring training next season or if he doesn’t, let him find his footing in AAA again first before calling him up.
August 4, 2025 at 6:02 pm #289618Needs to play 3B each and every day the rest of this season IMO. Memphis still has 44 games remaining.
August 4, 2025 at 8:49 pm #289649I agree he should be starting at 3B every day in Memphis. That opens him up to SS, 3B, 2B although realistically SS is taken by Winn and isn’t moving. That gives the team some flexibility going into the offeason on how they want to handle some moves which may very well all be dependent on Arenado.
