Sigh. ST means so very little. The only thing proven is Siani should not be on the od roster. But he probably will. Hence, ST means so very little.

KCB – I agree that ST results (ie stats) mean little and rightfully so in most cases. The process to get there is what is important – bat speed, line drives, good jumps, wise decisions, good pitch location, good pitch movement, etc.

I see Goold released an article today about the final 4 roster spots but I can’t see it since I don’t have a subscription. I just know he calls out RHR, CF, Utility, and 5th starter. I’m curious if he has Baker on the big league club or not if anyone has the ability to see.

    Katie Woo’s Roster Prediction:

Infielders: Arenado, Contreras, Donovan, Gorman, Winn

    Catchers: Herrera, Pages

    Outfielders: Nootbaar, Siani, Walker

    Bench: Baker, Barrero, Burleson

Rotation: Fedde, Gray, Matz, Mikolas, Pallante

Bullpen: Fernandez, Helsley, King, Leahy, Liberatore, Maton, Romoero, Roycroft

    Memphis: Scott, Koperniak, Fermin, McGreevy

I read Goold’s article but in typical Goold fashion it really doesn’t say much. Just a wordy article outlining the roster competitions that we already know about while trying to throw in some selection Sunday cute references, but without giving predictions.

I will never understand why he wins awards as a columnist.

Ok. I see Katie has it the same as I had it a few days ago before Maton signed with the exception of a Pallante/McGreevey swap in my listening. She has Maton taking O’Brien’s spot. I think it’s more likely he takes Roycroft’s spot but that’s splitting hairs.

Pallante did look a little better this past outing. If he looks solid again, the rotation spot is his. Assuming no injuries, the Cardinals should really trade one of Fedde or Matz and give McGreevey the last spot. He’s earned it and he might actually be better than either of those vets at this point.

I guess I was wrong on O’Brien. He was optioned yesterday along with Saggese, Helman, and Koperniak today. Roycroft should get that last pen spot unless they decide to give in to Anderson even though he doesn’t deserve it.

Besides Barrero and Maton, that would have been a likely 2025 roster guess the day after the 2024 season ended. The four listed as “Memphis” are the depth. Its really been a lame duck winter.

Re: “has more upside long term”

I knew neither in the minors. One looks like an outfielder, w/game. The other looks like he chose the wrong sport.

Bling, that is indeed basically what I guessed several months ago when I did the Rule 5 stuff. Except that I had Matz in the pen or traded and McGreevey in his spot. That may still happen.

31 left “in camp” so 5 cuts left to make.

Thompson is injured so count him out. So 4 to go.

    Bubble guys:

    SP: McGreevey, Pallante
    RP: Leahy, Roycroft, King, Anderson
    IF: Baker, Fermin, Barrero
    OF: Siani, Scott

    Likely 1 from each group.

For the kid’s sake, (okay, I’m 65, so he is a kid to me), I wish the would either trade or release Matt Koperniak. I know he wasn’t a highly ranked player, but all he has done has been better than anyone else we have in the minors. I can’t buy the he’s a AAAA player when they never give him a chance. Over 1000 OPS this spring, career .834 OPS in the minors and not a bad fielder.

Let’s keep Siani, great fielder and makes Mario Mendoza look like 1941 Ted Williams.

    I just don’t get it.

Koperniak has only been on the 40-man roster for four months now, so he isn’t exactly dying on the vine. He will be needed soon enough.

I’ve never seen him play baseball. Is he pretty good?

Consider him average at everything. Hitting, power, running, defense. His arm is a little weak maybe. And his hit tool is maybe just a little above average.

I would think Donovan would be the backup 4th outfielder if Noot or Walker gets hurt. Koperniak would then be the next man up after that (but would likely be called up if any of those 3 gets hurt). Barrero is his main competition for that role, but Barrero also backs up Winn, which is why he likely makes the team.

Thanks, Jnevel. Sounds like he’s the ideal sort of player for the current Cardinal brand. He’ll fit right in.

Ive seen him in only 3 games Dom. He plays a better LF than Noot. If Noot is a CF’r, I’d have Koperniak ahead of him on the depth charts, defensively. His D has caught my eye. He goes into the LF corner very strong.

Who knows long term. Mo has the Walker agenda and Oli really talked up Siani at WWU. Maybe he falls through the cracks like many other of our outfielders have, and carves out a career elsewhere. Or, maybe the FO goes old school and use their eyes. TBD.

IMO, Koperniak is a little better outfielder than Nootbaar in both left and center fields. It’s probably even in RF. Neither has much business as a CFer though compared to Scott or Siani.

Ahh, the yearly discussion of how we have so much pitching depth…then the reality sets in and we need to trade for pitching by July.

We won’t be trading for anything but prospects come the deadline if we’re out of contention.

I don’t think the Cards will make many trade additions this year. But the pattern has mostly been the same for the last 10 years…”pitching depth” thins quickly and they find themselves in need. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Pretty much except she has Contreras as the starting 1B and Burly as DH/Bench.

If Victor Scott keeps hitting the Cardinals are going to have a difficult time justifying sending him to Memphis to open the season.

I think Scott and LUUUUUKEN!are going to be big contributions G. Maybe more so than Walker and Gorman.
