July 25, 2024 at 7:50 am #261532I noticed Trent Baker mentioned above. It reminded me of the interest with which I read Blake Newberry’s scouting report in the Trent Baker article for this year’s pre-season top prospects series. Blake pointed out a serious impediment to Baker’s success as he advanced into the upper levels, and suggested what might be done about it. I do not know if he was right or wrong, or what was done or not done, but Baker has not been very successful this year in AA.
In my mind, he is lumped in with prospects like Rajcic and Nunez. Pitchers who, unlike many others, appear to have the physical durability to be starting pitchers. In my mind, this is the first bar to be cleared, but the Cardinals development system seems to often leave it for last, especially with the hot prospect types. The problem is that the Cardinals system has absolutely no success developing these guys into the sort of reliable workhorse mid rotation starters that are the backbone of a rotation, day in, day out. At best, they end up with a McGreevey, or some of the laundry list guys.
Blake’s report on Baker is one of the free articles from the series. I encourage anyone interested to give it a read.
July 25, 2024 at 8:03 am #261535At this point, Baker is only starting because 3/5 of the Springfield rotation is injured. From others’ misfortune, opportunity always arises…
I am sure Blake will appreciate your comments. I am biased, but I believe that over the course of the year, the quality of his work alone makes a subscription worthwhile. Right now, we are working on incorporating the new draft picks into the Top 50 and that article should run Friday, including his in-depth scouting reports on the best ones.
July 25, 2024 at 8:46 am #261541Baker is only starting because 3/5 of the Springfield rotation is injured
Yes, exactly. We have already discussed elsewhere the likelihood of those three ever having an impact in STL. Those not injured are unlikely to have an impact either, IMO, Which is the problem I refer to here.
Yes, the content available to members is incredible.
I looked up the Baker article to post the link but did not re-read it just now. IIRC, though, Blake failed to include the need to ‘add a few ticks’ in his report. He needs to be careful about omitting that from any report on any pitching prospect or the other analysts will not let him sit at their table in the lunch room.
July 25, 2024 at 8:59 am #261542Where we disagree is in two areas: 1) lumping three different people into the same bucket and 2) predicting that none of them will ever have an impact in MLB. That is assuming the worst. For example, Hence is still in every major Top 50 list in the industry.
I guess it can be an effective strategy to assume every minor leaguer will fail to make an MLB impact since probably 90% of them will eventually fit that bill. Mathematically speaking, you’ll be right far more often than wrong, but consistently forecasting rain makes for a gloomy outlook every day and you’ll never see the sun. I will continue to seek balance.
July 25, 2024 at 10:24 am #261552It boils down to different definitions of being optimistic and being realistic. Hence looked great in A level ball as a lot of guys do. He moved up to AA and was not effective any more. He did not get any better through that second half last year. There was talk about having him add muscle, bulk to his frame. I don’t know what he did or didn’t do over the winter, but this year he was having success in AA. Then he ran into arm trouble and it has been since the end of May that he last pitched, besides a couple one inning trials in early June. Coming up on two months. There was talk of a side session back before the futures game. I haven’t heard much else.
Brian, it is my view that it does not matter if a pitcher can be effective if doing so requires him to push his arm and body beyond what it is able to tolerate. Hence’s situation looks to me exactly like that. He now has had to back off and try to figure out how to be effective pitching in a way his arm can handle before he tore it up for good. It is why I think that being realistic means it is up to him now to show whether he can be effective against upper level hitters pitching in a way that his arm can tolerate. That will take the better part of a season to establish, once he is back on the mound and worked up to a regular rotation slot. In my mind, it is absolutely not certain, and very probably not even likely that that will happen. I see no point in hanging a top prospect tag around his neck unless and until. Doing otherwise is just hoping and praying. It is playing make believe as I have said.
July 26, 2024 at 6:41 am #261599Funny how one side is represented as optimistic and the other is considered realistic, instead of pessimistic. That says all that needs to be said.
July 26, 2024 at 6:41 am #261600The #STLCards system went 5-1 on Thursday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Chen-Wei Lin, tossed six innings of one-hit ball with nine Ks for Palm Beach. Other standouts: Jordan Walker, Brycen Mautz, Joshua Baez, Leonardo Bernal, Brayden Jobert and Andrew Bolivar.… pic.twitter.com/QiPVbieCVs

July 26, 2024 at 8:13 am #261603Good to see Mr. Lin bounce back after a rough one. Looking at his monthly split, it seemed like he might be wearing down, but he’s got some left. He’s putting together a nice pitching line. I am getting excited about seeing how he does vs the next level and less curated environment away from the Cardinals complex in Jupiter. Is there a promotion coming with the shuffle associated with inserting the draftees?
July 26, 2024 at 8:44 am #261605
stlcard25ParticipantChen-Wei, or “Wei-No” as as our one day future Cardinal stalwart is known, certainly has fared well in early returns. He has quite the arm on him… let’s hope that we see him gracing the mound at Dozer Park soon.
July 26, 2024 at 2:47 pm #261620Mathews’ stats indicate he may be getting tired. Time to shut him down?
July 26, 2024 at 3:49 pm #261622I don’t know CC. He is at 95 IP. He did 125 last year and 100 the year before that. He is throwing the same number of pitches and facing the same number of batters as he did in A level earlier. It just isn’t getting him as far into games. He may follow the Hence path and have trouble in AA the rest of this year and then look better next year. Hopefully their paths will diverge after that.
July 27, 2024 at 6:13 am #261713I’m glad Mathews is getting challenged in AA as it shows he needed to refine his secondaries more. Obviously I wish he was performing better, but at least he is being tested now rather than coasting by.
July 27, 2024 at 7:43 am #261721The #STLCards system was 2-3 on Friday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, DSL Cardinals LF Andru Arthur, was 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. Other standouts include Nick Raquet, Alex Cornwell and Tre Richardson. https://t.co/UpSDriclt3 pic.twitter.com/fwlm17y6Qv

July 27, 2024 at 7:54 am #261722Big event tonight in Springfield. The Cardinal Nation no. 2 #STLCards prospect Tink Hence (4-2, 3.29) starts vs. Corpus Christi. The RHP has thrown just three innings in the last eight weeks and none in the last five weeks. The 21 y/o has a lot of ground to make up, starting now. pic.twitter.com/ZyTvMSpyJk

July 27, 2024 at 7:59 am #261725That is great news Hence is healthy enough to be considered for a start. I imagine they will have him on a limited pitch count. Fingers crossed everything goes better this time.
July 27, 2024 at 8:07 am #261727How many starters in the Cardinals system have turned in 3 quality starts of their last 6 turns? Besides Cornwell, I mean?
July 27, 2024 at 8:46 am #261728Bling, off the top of my head without looking, I would guess Lin, Bedell, McGreevey, Hjerpe, Savacool, and maybe Saladin. I would not have guessed Cornwell. Rincon, Davila, and Henderson would all be worth looking at too, but I’m guessing none of them makes that cut due to innings mostly. I bet that’s a lot better than you may have thought. Of course I could be wrong. 3 out of 6 is a bit of a high standard for minor league guys who often have some innings limitations (which everyone does – not just the Cardinals).
July 27, 2024 at 9:04 am #261730Ok. I looked it up just to see.
Lin has 2. He was limited in innings or he may have gotten 3-4.
Bedell has 2. But 3 of his other starts he narrowly missed the innings threshold.
McGreevey has 3.
Hjerpe has 0. I really failed on that guess. He was stopped at 5 innings several times.
Savacool has 2. I forgot he pitched in relief a couple times so if those count as “outings” he’s not going to hit the standard you set.
Saladin has 2. He was limited in innings a couple times. He’d have 3 if you go back to his past 7.
Rincon has 2 but has 3 other “almosts”.
Davila has 3. So he meets the threshold.
Henderson has 3 as well.
Cornwell has just 1. Not sure why you picked him.
So, 3 have hit that standard of 3 quality starts in their last 6 outings. But there are several others who are very close.
July 27, 2024 at 9:23 am #261735Looks like some good candidates for July Pitcher of the Month…
July 27, 2024 at 9:55 am #261737You are right about the innings, of course. It is meaningful for the upper level guys, though. Many of the upper level starters haven’t even taken the mound the last six rotation turns, or any turns recently. Those that are answering the bell, and turning in quality starts are really the only ones I am intereted in. They constitute the pool of starters who could possibly be ML rotation regulars some day. But the Cardinals are really bad at working them up to that level. Guys who achieve success by pushing their arm beyond what it can tolerate are not the answer, whatever prospect rank you want to hang on them.
July 27, 2024 at 10:21 am #261738McGreevey and Bedell are your 2 guys then. They have been answering the bell and pitching well. Bedell is still adjusting to AAA a bit, but he’s still been pretty solid.
The Cardinals will need to add a whole lot of guys to the roster by season’s end to protect them from rule 5: McGreevey, Bedell, Granillo, Hence, Roby, and Saggese come to mind immediately. But there are others that will be considered.
July 27, 2024 at 10:42 am #261740I have McGreevy and Cornwell each with 3 QS in their last 6 turns. Bedell has 2.
