The Double-A injuries are concerning, but I was not aware that Hence and Hjerpe and Roby are going to miss the rest of July, all of August and then September, too. Probably none of them could pitch in the AFL this fall, either. Guess we can just close the books on 2024 right now…
Roby was originally listed as having pitched in relief last night, but I guess it was changed to Garcia.
Brian you clearly missed the point of my previous post, which was that those three will not establish sufficient durability to matter any time soon. Given their histories and length of lay off, I do not consider there to be time left this season to establish that they can hold up physically. I get that you want to pretend that a few games establishes they are good as new, as with your pre-season ranking of Roby after a few IPs despite his history. I get that you aren’t the only one who likes to play make believe, but don’t chop my head off for not playing along.
To be clear about it. I think Roby is all but done. I think Hence blew up his shoulder and will, at best, struggle along in fits and starts similar to Hudson. I say that because it is typical of pitchers with serious shoulder trouble. I think Hjerpe is headed for elbow surgery and a lengthy layoff. I say that because there is no structure within an elbow that sheds bits when healthy. Loose bodies are the result of either injury or wear beyond what the structure can tolerate. He is now out again after having the bodies removed. His elbows is likely continuing to come apart. Again, pretend whatever you want, but I will not play along.
Here we go again. My opinion is real. Yours is make-believe and pretending. No, they are both points of view, which will only be proven right or wrong over time.
It is well established that you take the negative slant on most everything, but why can’t you present your disagreement in a civil manner instead of name-calling?
Let’s get specific about the three pitchers.
Do you know that Hjerpe’s current ailment is specifically with his elbow and related to his 2023 problem? His manager only said it is arm-related but is nothing structural. He was sat down as a precaution and will be back soon. Do you have contrary information?
Regarding Hence, do you have a source that indicates his shoulder is the problem? Again, the Cards are saying he is ok after experiencing cramping and he has been throwing again. We will soon see how fast he gets back into games and if he can make up for lost time in the remaining weeks of the season. He could also pitch in the fall again, but I am getting repetitive.
Roby is a major unknown and without specific information, it is premature to make any career assessments.
It would have been great for Hence and Roby to be with Memphis right now, but they aren’t. Bedell is, at least, and doing well.
I do not have inside information. In any or all of those injury cases, the player might return to action this season and still be going strong well into next season. If that happens, then that player would again be relevant as a prospect. My initial comment concerned what the system has, in the way of up and coming starting pitchers, in the upper levels, AA and AAA, looking forward to next year. My position is that none of the three factor in as of now, nor will they until well into next season, if at all. Of the three, Hjerpe seems to have the best chance, as elbows are often more fixable than shoulders. But I see utterly no point in pretending that something is there that is not there.
No one is “pretending” anything. You are making assumptions about what you think the injuries are and generally assuming the worst. Why is that any less “pretending” than to think they can come back?
You are making a personal assumption that once a prospect is injured, he is no longer relevant until healthy again. That is an opinion that not many seem to share, but you are entitled to your view.
The way I look at it is that injuries and lost time slow down a prospect and he might drop in the rankings as a result (as we have already done with Roby). That doesn’t mean he can’t and won’t eventually get there.
I do agree that none of these guys look to be a factor for St. Louis at the start of 2025 and that is disappointing. But I haven’t seen anyone here “pretending” they are yet ready for the bigs. No one can see what things will be like a year from now. But, injuries have certainly slowed down their timetable. It happens in baseball. But they are still prospects until proven they are not.
We may disagree, but I am not accusing you of “pretending”.
On the subject of Bedell, who has been mentioned, I suggest caution. Like Hence, this is Bedell’s 4th year and yet, like Hence, he is only now going past 100 IP in a season and being pushed past 5 IP per start. We are only now finding out if he can physically tolerate the work load.
In Bedell’s case, I believe it was TJ surgery and recovery that held things up. I don’t know why they slow walked Hence. But the point is Bedell is only now establishing that he can be a starter at all, much less an effective one. Hence did not tolerate the work load and Bedell is doing better. I agree that if Bedell holds up through the season, he will be an exciting addition to the AAA staff.
