You like Roby now he’s undergone Tommy John and pretty much is a no go for 26?
I think my assessment is the same. He needs to stay healthy. Who knows what he will look in 2027? Time will tell.
It seems we should’ve gone for quality rather than quantity with our 2023 deadline deals.
I think you could say we did a soft sell in 2018 though too. We dealt Pham for Cabrera and Williams and Luke Voit for Gallegos.
Just wanted to revisit this one real quick. As of the end of the 2025 season, 6 of the 10 players acquired at the 2023 deadline have played major league innings.
Three of the six promoted to the Show thus far have been pretty irrelevant:
– Kloffenstein threw 1 perfect inning in St. Louis and was subsequently released the following offseason.
– Rom threw 33 2/3 innings at the back end of 2023 with an ERA over 8.00. He was injured in 2025 (and most of 2024).
– Prieto has taken 6 at bats and struck out in 5 of those, singling in the other.The other three that have been promoted have been ok to good:
– Svanson threw 60 1/3 innings out of the bullpen in 2025 with a 1.95 ERA and .88 WHIP. Really impressive.
– Saggese logged 49 at bats in 2024 with a .556 OPS and 257 at bats in 2025 with a .641 OPS.
– King gave the Cardinals 18 2/3 innings in 2023 at a 1.45 ERA, 60 innings in 2024 at a 2.85 ERA, and 48 1/3 innings in 2026 with a 4.66 ERA. Overall, he’s been pretty solid.The other four:
– Robberse is still in AAA and was injured almost the entire 2025 season.
– Roby moved up to AAA this season and was doing well prior to getting hurt and will be out a good portion of the 2026 season.
– Showalter is in High A, but has become a relief pitcher and had lots of struggles.
– Sammy Hernandez is in High A and put together a so-so season. He’s now been passed up as a primary catcher.How was this return? Well, it hasn’t really changed the future too much. Svanson was a real revelation this year and we have him for years to come. King has 2 1/2 solid to good seasons, although my guess is he will be non-tendered this offseason. Saggese looks to be at least a solid utility player. Showalter, Hernandez, and Rom are likely lost causes at this point. I don’t expect them to make anymore major league impacts. Kloffenstein is gone. I really don’t see Prieto making a positive major league impact either and was surprised to see him added to the 40-man at all. I’m completely unsure what will happen with Robberse. Roby is the one big hope left if he heals up and is effective again. It’s a big IF.
