“WP – Matz”. Only took until the second half of July to see that. Hopefully we see a lot more of it and he becomes sort of a latter day “1985 John Tudor”.

I will be up in Evergreen paddle boarding today, so I won’t be able to watch this one anyway – hence no big deal on the Apple TV. Now that I am more retired than working, although I do a little contract work here and there, I don’t usually like being inside during the day. Too much fun to be had outdoors.

Nice to see this club doing things right finally. Will be interesting to see how long this lasts, and if it impacts the deadline decision on the structure of the club.

Love to Steele one this afternoon in Wrigley. Without doing the research, I’m trying to think when both the Cardinals and the cubs were the two worst teams in their division? My apologies to the Pirates, as they certainly cannot be left out as being one of the 2023 divisional patsies. It had to be sometime in the 70’s when both St. Louis and Chicago were the two worst clubs in their division……..but maybe not. Back then there were a lot more teams in each division and as bad as these two clubs were at times, it’s unlikely that both occupied the divisional dungeon. Now we in no shape or form want this to happen, but if Pittsburgh can just play close to .500 ball the rest of the way, this may be the first time in baseball history that the Cards and cubs flags waved at the bottom of the Wrigley flag pole come season’s end. What’s for din-din one may ask? It’ll be a trip to Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse and then afterwards for dessert, it’ll be 3 Popeye’s apple cinnamon pies.

If we beat Cy Alcantera, Stroman and Steele, back to back to back, they can go ahead and have the flag made.

Not a good day for the Redbirds. 4-1 Cubs heading into the last of the 6th. Can’t score against Steele and Fletcher has given up two homeruns to Mastrubuoni and Bellinger.

Going to have to score late against the Cubs pen if we want to keep the winning streak alive.

FYI here…..The top 3/4 in the lineup today – Carlson, Nootbaar, Goldschmidt, Arenado – are a combined 0-10 on the day.

    Can’t win like that.

UPDATE: After a wild pitch by Merryweather allows two runners into scoring position Arenado singles to center and now it’s a 4-3 Cubs lead with two outs in the top of the 7th.

Redbirds have the bases loaded in the top of the 8th still trailing 4-3.

    Burleson is facing Leiter.

    Stay tuned……..

UPDATE: Burleson grounds into a inning ending DP

Still 4-3 Cubs heading to the last of the 8th.

You pull Gorman for Burleson Pinch hitting??? They did that.

What a stupid move by our manager! He sucks!

Umpire cost us a run. Called 2 strikes on Burleson that weren’t strikes. Should have been a game tying walk.

Glad I’m getting to watch a game tho!

Also, can’t blame Burleson for getting tossed.

That last “strike” to Burleson was 4-5 inches outside. Maybe the worst called strike I’ve seen all season. The one before it was also ball 4 but at least it was close.

Gorman is at least hit or miss. That’s why you pinch hit him there.

Did Burly get the heave-ho for merely contesting balls/strikes, or did he do something really creative?

Yeah, but Gorman doesn’t hit balls 5 inches off the plate well either. We got screwed.

He was screaming at the home plate umpire while walking to the dugout.

Just for arguing after the double play. He was definitely hot, but he didn’t really argue long.

Easiest ground ball ever goes right under Morel’s glove. Looked like Buckner. Then Contreras is HBP.
