Nice memories and insights, Bling. Did you see Dick Allen play with the Sox? I went to an Angels game in Anaheim in late ‘74 where they were playing the White Sox. I wanted to see Allen, and he never got the ball out of the infield that night.
On a different note, I am old school but I still don’t get Mikolas with that big chain around his neck. That is fine for the night club, or whatever else you want to do when not pitching. But pitching is not about showing off your jewelry. It’s about being unencumbered for anything that might come your way. I would be a lousy manager as I would probably not prohibit that sort of thing, but would tell my guys that for their own safety and for the team it’s best to keep the shiny stuff in the clubhouse.
July 8, 2023 at 3:02 pm #227232A Banks playing for Chicago! But he is a left handed pitcher – blasphemy!! 🙂
July 8, 2023 at 3:31 pm #227233Bikemike, the only time I specifically remember seeing Allen was a double header at Busch toward the end of his career. I remember my dad being excited to see him come to town but he was done by then and didn’t do much. He must have been in the NL obviously.
July 8, 2023 at 3:39 pm #227234Hey! The Cardinals get a win!
The bullpen doesn’t give up any runs!
July 8, 2023 at 3:40 pm #227235Well, now my brother says when we would go up there as kids, dad always got us there way early in the day to see Allen take BP. I can’t decide if I remember that or just recreating it in my head.
July 8, 2023 at 3:42 pm #227236We have a couple pen guys who can play, usually. In the old days that would be enough.
July 8, 2023 at 3:59 pm #227237Yeah things gave changed Bling. Watched the last half of the game on gameday. Walker dingers again! Mikolas was very good today. Ended with the Gallegos and Hicks combo. If we get Helsley back we’re not to far away from a good pen. Starting rotation still a black hole. Cabbys can be pretty good sometimes. If some pen guys step up things could be somewhat better. Everybody on offense today contributed offensively in some way. Hits both teams almost the same. Pitching very similar. We were competitive with ths SOX. Many teams we are outclassed but thats sports. Still fun to watch. Its a winner! Go Cardinals!
July 8, 2023 at 4:49 pm #227240Taking a gander at the out-of-town scoreboard today?
The Yankees down the Cubs 6-3 at Yankee Stadium.
Detroit throws a combined no-hitter over the Blue Jays. 2-0 Tigers the final at Tiger Stadium.
The Reds and Brewers are tied 5-5 in the 5th at County Stadium.
Pirates lead the D’Backs 1-0 in the 7th at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix.
July 8, 2023 at 5:55 pm #227241Well they may yet get that 38th win before the All Star Break. That was the mark I figured so let’s see how tomorrow goes.
July 8, 2023 at 6:37 pm #227242Scoreboard update:
The Reds down the Brewers 8-5. Elmer Cruz stole 2nd, 3rd, and home when the Brewers didn’t pay any attention to him.
Arizona wins over Pittsburgh 3-2 in ten innings.
Angels and Dodgers later tonight.
July 8, 2023 at 8:27 pm #227243Those D-Backs are good. Corbin Carroll might be the best kept secret in baseball. All you hear about is Elly de la Cruz right now, but Carroll is having a terrific year and is easily the ROY in the NL right now.
July 8, 2023 at 8:56 pm #227248Yes, Carroll has been great. Here are the current NL ROY odds, per betonline.ag:
Carroll 1/4
De La Cruz 3/1
No one else is better than 30/1
Walker is off the board -
