In the Sunday game at Los Angeles between the Cubs and Dodgers the homeplate umpire called both Heyward and Freeman out on strikes that were both balls. The call on Heyward was clearly inside and the one on Freeman was clearly low. Cubs got a break after losing on Saturday night when they were one out away from a win.

If Burly is down a couple days it will skew the outfield thinking. But it seems like maybe the O’Neill in CF experiment is over. Nobody is shedding tears over that.

    Walker’s current batting line:

    .267/.302/.400/.702

    OPS+ 93

The onscreen box is exposing umpires. I’m not saying anything about calling balls and strikes is easy but good grief there are obvious misses every single inning for both teams.

The batters are all younger and so by default have better eyesight than an aging umpire.

Now that we clearly have the technology to properly call balls and strikes MLB needs to use it.

Bad (wrong) calls ruin at bats and games for both hitters and pitchers.

Each umpire seems to have their own version of the strike zone and it’s not always consistent from inning to inning or even batter to batter.

Roboumps are coming. The current umps should be trying even harder to head that off instead of helping to justify the change.

How do you draw that conclusion? Did you see Nootbaar in center misplay a single into a triple to the leadoff batter Sunday? He finished the game in left. Carlson is 0-for-8 with three strikeouts since his return from injury (not exile as you had previously suggested). Maybe there was some news I missed, but to me CF is more of a question now than ever.

Oh, the men behind the mask can still ‘call’ the balls and strikes and make the hand signals – keep the count – eat another scoop of ice cream.

They will just have an earpiece for comms that will tell them what they just saw because 10-15% of the time (my impression) they are missing the call.

I rarely complain about umpires, but HPU Little’s performance in Saturday’s game was almost as if he was intentionally taunting both managers with his ball/strike calls. It was genuinely over the top. He should be subjected to both an intense interrogation and a polygraph session.

I would say Walker is starting to hit that wall which will ultimately end up with him being sent down to Memphis to get things together again. I told everybody that Walker will be sent back to Memphis by Memorial Day. At this point I don’t think he is going to make it to Memorial Day.

Bling may be right. O’Neill in LF with Noot back in CF. We will see how long this lasts. As much as Marmol likes Mercado, he might have gotten a shot, but hitting .186 in Triple-A precludes that.

Goldschmidt just got a game at DH during Saturday’s loss. Unless he’s hurt, I want him not only to swing the bat 4 or 5 times, but also to have his GG at 1B. And comparing Donovan’s GG to Goldy’s at 1B is not unlike comparing a 4th grade school girl to a 28 yr. old centerfold model. Why is our best player entirely absent from the line-up?

For what possible reason is Contreras batting third?

There is no reason for Contreras to bat third.

The simple explanation for Contreras in the 3 slot is that somewhere in the desert there’s an owl flying backwards in the daytime yelling, “what…what…what?”

I went with shoulder impingement trying to put off some chores around the house. Lets just say that if Lady Bling was the PBO nobody would be on the IL all season.

Contreras should get different looks in the 3 slot. We’ll see what he does with it.

On Goldy, it is his first game of the season off. Do you really expect a 35-year-old to play all 162 games?

No, I don’t guess he can play all 162, BW, but he’s had 2 or 3 games at DH. I’d play him all 3 at AZ and let him regroup on Fri. in Seattle after the off day on Thurs.

He’s not too old to get paid for all 162 games.

I was a bit worried when I saw him make a head first diving play at first to save a bad throw yesterday. He has had back issues now and then. I don’t think he is being babied, but just maybe he needs the rest.

Counting today, assuming he doesn’t play, he is on this pace:

    1B 133 games
    DH 19 games
    Playing 152 games
    Off 10 games

He played 151 games last season and won the MVP award so this approach looks entirely reasonable to me.

Yeah, I noticed that he got up a little slow after that play. In any event, if he isn’t hurt, I’d have played him all 3 games in AZ. Wednesday’s a noon game with a day off on Thursday.

Since Memphis is off today, I kind of thought DeJong would head back here. Guess not. Its the mother of all rehab assignments I guess.

There’s quite a bit of recidivism associated with many of those rehab facilities, Bling. It’s possible that he’s simply not ready to walk out of there and face his hitting demons yet…

They know he can’t help in St. Louis, that’s the bottom line.
