My take on the game is we had ample baserunners but did not convert any of it into runs. That happens when the top 4 in the lineup go Ofer. We let them hang around long enough to take it in the 10th. It sounds like we kind of played bungle ball in the 10th and lost to a team that played better. But its hard to tell from the box score and recap.
The bright spot is Hudson was good. He probably will be until his shoulder acts up.
I assume the stands were prety empty again.
I know Gorman can really punnish the ball when he ties in. But the same is true of a lot of guys. O’Neill, DeJong was like that before he petered out. I think we are going to get just as tired of all the strike outs as we have with other similar hitters. He gets hot some times, but mostly its a homer a week and not much in between. That is the sad reality.
During the game, I was talking to one of my brothers, who was watching on TV. He said Goldschmidt looks like he can’t stay with a good fastball anymore and looks over matched. I’ve seen that said now and then and it looked that way to me also when I was watching games earlier in the year. If he is trying to adjust his approach to compensate, he is having uneven luck. The move up to second in the lineup would correspond to an an approach which is moving toward making contact and getting on base rather than swinging for the fence. Not saying that is happening, but it might be. I have a feeling the situation with him is going to be a problem next year. Between him and Gorman, we could end up with way too many Ks in the heart of the order.
Arenado has a second half OPS+ of 90. That is over 178 PAs and 42 games, not a small sample size. His SLG is down 100 points from the first half, and his OBP is down too, to .292 in the second half. In other words, he’s been a bottom of the order hitter in the middle of the lineup since the AS break. Some say his defense has been uneven at times too. I think what we need to hope is that he’s had back trouble the whole time. That’s a helluva thing to be hoping for.
To my thinking, the pitching is only half the problem, and fixing half the problem won’t fix the problem. That’s what has me really worried about next season.
