I sort of think Flaherty had his career path all figured out. Then he ran into injury problems, and one thing after another. I think he had a lot of trouble figuring out how to pitch in a way his shoulder would tolerate. He’s just mortal after all, and his career is going to be whatever he can scratch out, depending on how his arm holds up. It probably knocked him off center. That business with Contreras earlier tells me he’s off center still.
He hit that baseball out to dead CF with what could almost be called a gentle swing. That’s tater number 22 for Mr. Gorman.
With Donovan, Nootbaar and Gorman in the lineup, I like our chances to win if we can just get decent pitching.
In fact, I’d rather face rightie pitchers than lefties. Our lefty bats are that good.

Gorman’s power is impressive. Watching him in a game at Coors last year it was something to see the way the ball jumps off his bat. He misses pitches in the zone that you think he should connect on, but when he connects it can be a sight to see.
Not watching this one but am following on my phone. At a place in Chicago called “Shoeless Joe’s”. Can’t get much cooler than that.
It really does take off, Bikemike. I noticed it when he first emerged from AAA last season. It simply leaves the bat in a different manner than most hitters. And although the rip sometimes looks effortless, the baseball still takes off like he really muscled up and turned on it.
Man, the potatoes are flying all over the place, Why can’t we do this on a regular basis. Rah Cardinals!
It’s crazy, but we are a 115 ops+ against clubs w/a .500 record or above.
We are a 97 vs less than .500 clubs.
I don’t know how they can determine that wasn’t fan interference. If this was a close score in a really important game, that would be a miscarriage of the entire American justice system…Haha!
I’m of the belief that defense and pitching go hand in hand in the sense that they both augment one another and when a team is subjected to a manager who has no clue as how to align, manipulate and utilize either one of those two components that make up the defensive side of the playing field, the result is a team that has hovered around a dozen games below sea level all season long.

Yes, that has been known to baseball people for 100 years, but I don’t think it is known to wonks, at least not our wonks. Our defensive decline has been self inflicted. There have been injuries to good defenders (O’Neill, Edman, Donovan. Noot was out earlier too). But the decline was underway before all that. And the striking aspect is it has mostly been up the middle, the most critical part of defense. Mo traded a gold glove center fielder, and then signed a known shitty defensive catcher. Both cirtical up the middle defensive positions. Then he put a third baseman at second, replacing a gold glover with an average defender. He also put an infielder out in corner outfield with woeful defensive results. Then, the best defensive center fielder we have has hardly played any center field all year. All these things were done to bolster other aspects at the expense of defense. Say what you want about that, but the results have been a disaster.
We might get some new players, but the FO and field level management, and “the philosophy”, are going to remain the same.
We have shuffled guys around a lot in order to fit bats in the lineup. But then we put together a goofy batting order. Go figure.
But as long as we score 10 or 11 runs, who cares. The order is working despite me season long gripes. Unfortunately is does not work often enough to overcome our lousy defense and pitching.
