Opening his professional career with a bang, @GoPBCardinals right-handed starter Max Rajcic @maxrajcic put together the top overall pitching performance in the #stlcards system in April. Compare the 21-year-old's results to six other finalists. (free) https://t.co/Ksgy5UynqE pic.twitter.com/PPcpamJIVt

May 2, 2023 at 3:05 pm #218616In a virtual landslide, The Cardinal Nation’s choice as the top hitter in the #STLCards system during April is Memphis 1B Luken Baker, who bested nine other finalists. The 26-year-old is a (very) big reason why the first-place Redbirds are 18-9. (free) https://t.co/haaORkoX8O pic.twitter.com/zVzKxKHKeB

May 4, 2023 at 11:31 am #218930The Cardinals have made Baker and Matthew Liberatore their April selections.
I have a question for readers. Please take a look at my Pitcher of the Month article. I look at straight stats, giving everyone an equal chance. Does that discriminate against guys at the highest levels? What do you think?
June 1, 2023 at 2:26 pm #222946The Cardinal Nation’s choice as the top hitter in the #stlcards system during May is Memphis catcher Ivan Herrera, who logged a 1.126 OPS and edged out seven other finalists. Full details in this free article. https://t.co/eFmTFwfExM pic.twitter.com/XjaLGRtvp5

June 1, 2023 at 4:38 pm #222955I would have a hard time picking anyone but Gomez. The ISO more than 100 points higher than anyone else, except Redmond (50 points higher), is astonishing. Its an all or nothing game these days, so we have to look at it from the perspective of value in that environment.
Obviously, if prospect value were a factor, the answer would likely be different.
June 1, 2023 at 5:11 pm #222960
jj-cf-stlParticipantDiscriminate? No. After reading the article, and considering the factors you outlined, the award is well deserved.
His BB/K and WHIP fit the goal of every pitcher, keep the bases empty (as possible).
The batters in AAA are better, sure, but so are the pitchers. Across all levels, level appropriate is a fair comparison, for me.
June 1, 2023 at 5:33 pm #222961I agree. Straight stats is best with relative ties going to higher levels or guys who are extra young for their level.
And I agree with you your choice of Herrera. Although I’d love to have given it to Mendlinger just because he’s likely to never get another chance.
June 1, 2023 at 5:44 pm #222963Thanks jj for reminding me about Brian’s question from last month.
Does that discriminate against guys at the highest levels?
My thought was, if the results over time are skewed in favor of the lower levels, then yes, the method employed probably discriminates in favor of lower level pitchers. If results over time are balanced across levels, then no, the method does not discriminate. I had intended to see if I could look into it, but haven’t had the chance.
June 2, 2023 at 12:14 pm #222997In his 2nd month as a pro, the turnaround by Peoria left-handed starter Cooper Hjerpe was so substantial that the 22-year-old posted the top overall pitching performance in the #STLCards system in May. Also review the numbers by 10 other finalists. (free) https://t.co/Uo2LkJ66nl pic.twitter.com/coNBaOBURg

July 4, 2023 at 1:20 pm #226541The Cardinal Nation’s choice as the top hitter in the #stlcards system during June is Springfield second baseman Nick Dunn, who logged a .971 OPS, walked more than he struck out and edged out nine other finalists. July 5, 2023 at 8:01 pm #226782July 5, 2023 at 8:57 pm #226845Rajcic deserved the honor alone
July 7, 2023 at 2:19 pm #227088Rajcic was good, but Roy Garcia was even better.
Who in the heck is Roy Garcia and why is the RHR The Cardinal Nation’s #stlcards June Pitcher of the Month, over many other deserving hurlers including top prospects Tink Hence and Max Rajcic? (free) https://t.co/JP1ZGbW5Ha pic.twitter.com/Y3PvthZhmu

August 1, 2023 at 10:27 am #230082Tired of rumors? Here's some real news! The Cardinal Nation’s choice as the top hitter in the #STLCards system during July is unquestionably Memphis shortstop Masyn Winn. 10 finalists’ results are analyzed. (free) https://t.co/1g0hklBYKz pic.twitter.com/mpFcPtIVxP

August 2, 2023 at 2:15 pm #230409(corrected) Read why Nelfy Ynfante, an 18-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Summer League, is The Cardinal Nation’s #STLCards📷 system July Pitcher of the Month, over five other finalists including top prospects Tink Hence and Brycen Mautz. August 4, 2023 at 9:15 pm #230671The Cardinals organization chose Winn and Mautz, as I predicted.
Cardinals Select Masyn Winn and Brycen Mautz July’s Top Minors Player and Pitcher
August 5, 2023 at 11:22 am #23069314NyquisT
ParticipantThis is why I wait for the Cardinal’s selections. Totally more accurate than previous selections here. Its fairly obvious why.
August 5, 2023 at 1:41 pm #23070414NyquisT, please explain how you define “more accurate” in the context of award recognition, which by definition is inexact and somewhat subjective. Perhaps I can learn something in how I present and analyze the data. It is only fair that since you have read my logic and you apparently do not agree, that you share your thought process.
As an aside, I am not trying to mimic or predict what the Cardinals will do. I take my own look with the goal of posting ours before theirs so they do not influence the choice. And they do not share what went into their decision as we do.
This month, it is not obvious to me why Mautz should win when several others had better results. Though Mautz is clearly the best prospect from among the six qualifiers with the lowest ERAs, that ranking is not a factor in our monthly selections.
I am open to other points of view that can be supported. Thanks.
August 6, 2023 at 11:55 am #230789Ny, I’d appreciate your response, please…
August 6, 2023 at 7:24 pm #230825The organization likes to hype their high draft picks, especially once they get close to the top of the system. They have no reason to recognize a DSL kid.
Its informative to read up on the standouts whatever their pedigree and wherever they fall in the system. I really don’t know how accuracy could even be contemplated as a concept when comparing players from the top and bottom of the system. Having a logical and substantially objective method makes for a fun and interesting excersize.
August 6, 2023 at 7:55 pm #230827Agreed, and thanks. But when posters disagree, they must have other ideas on how to better evaluate players. I am genuinely interested. I am fine with disagreement. I expect it at times, but one should not shy away from explaining themselves. Otherwise, it just feels like an arbitrary shot taken and we are better than that.
September 2, 2023 at 10:17 am #232970Edging out Peoria’s Jimmy Crooks, Springfield infielder Thomas Saggese is The Cardinal Nation’s August Player of the Month after dominating Texas League pitchers in his first month as a #STLCards prospect. 11 finalists’ results are analyzed. (free) https://t.co/FDtFDbS8qn pic.twitter.com/m5k5x1oJef
— Brian Walton (@B_Walton) September 2, 2023
September 2, 2023 at 11:56 am #232982Saggese has been a surprise to me, and as to Crooks I am still rubbing my chin and scrunching my brow, trying to decide what he may do for us. Its good to have some new interesting prospects. Among the let downs this year has been McGreevy and Graceffo fading from exciting top prospects to guys who might be back of rotation and depth types. I religeously shun the kool aide when it comes to guys in A ball and the Texas League, but I think I absorb some by proximity.
September 3, 2023 at 7:13 am #233054Max Rajcic, a 22-year-old right-hander from High-A Peoria, is The Cardinal Nation’s #STLCards system August Pitcher of the Month, edging out 10 other finalists. Details on all are provided. (free) pic.twitter.com/Jez8h4QNeY
