If they win tomorrow, the glass is half full.

Actually, we have to win the next two to get back to half full.

Ya’ll need to relax. You can’t judge the rotation on one outing. I think once the rotation goes around 3-4 times you evaluate. Once is like judging a hitter for one game who goes 0-4.

Good point Lee. Pitchers, like hitters need more than one game to be accurately evaluated.
Pitchers could give up 5 runs in one game, and then 4 over the next 2 games and have a 3 era.
same with hitters, go 0-4, than 4-8, .300
Lets give the team a little time…

I am glad to learn that having the statistically worst rotation in the NL is because of the Marmol-O’Neill feud. Who knew? This should be an easier problem to solve than I anticipated. Instead of Mo having to go to work all he has to do is have Ollie and Tyler hug it out and poof problems solved.

Marmol-O’Neill feud? The pitching is bad period. They are an average group of pitchers and they won’t be this bad going forward just not great. I was neutral on Marmol as a manager but he needs to handle the hard times better.

Half empty or half full. It still amounts to the thrill of kissing your sister.

gscott, why do you see them as linked? I see them as two completely separate things. If there is any link, I suppose it could be that Marmol was overly frustrated with the poor pitching and that was a catalyst for the manner in how he vented with O’Neill’s situation, but certainly no direct cause and effect on the poor pitching.

Dang Bling, I need to drink more coffee. Yep, we have to go on a 2 game winning streak just to get the glass to read half full. No easy feat to accomplish while in the midst of a 3 game skid at home and pointed towards enemy territory in MIL. Especially after being entirely outplayed and outclassed by an ATL ballclub that handed this team their backsides while plundering their own home. In any event, if the Redbirds continue this perilous descent, I’m reasonably certain their manager will see to it that they straighten up and fly right in the form of calling for an urgent, all hands on deck clubhouse meeting…With the media.

1td, just like the Cards’ pitching, your math is skipping a beat early this season. Gotta be the coffee. Coffee IS important. I used to brew a pot in the morning, but now I’m going with my wife’s Keurig. Not bad and a little more convenient.

Haha! I actually need to dial down the coffee a little, Euro. I get in the habit of drinking more than my fair share during the cold winter months, but I sort of naturally work my way out of it when the weather begins to warm up by switching to…Coca Cola!

It’s been two outings for Mikolas.

If Marmol has a beef with O’Neil that’s fine BUT he needs to keep it inside the clubhouse and not run his mouth at a presser.

Bad look for Marmol in my opinion.

It really was a bad look, ZTR, and you can rest assured that every member of the Cardinal roster has thoughts along those same lines. Allowing O’Neill to stay in the game for the final 2 innings and then occupying the post-game podium to rip his CF’er gives every indication that the issue was addressed in the presense of the media prior to addressing the issue with either the player or the team. Incredibly lousy judgement in my view.

It was sarcasm Euro. It was my attempt to highlight the obsession over the Marmol-O’Neill flap instead of focusing on a much bigger problem.

And for the record I would prefer Ollie to handle these things behind closed doors as well but the reason we sit at 2-4 right now is that our pitching staff is currently in shambles. Yes it is small sample theater but it isn’t like this wasn’t predicted by some of us all winter. It shouldn’t be that shocking really, which is unfortunate. Perhaps the staff will turn it around but as Yogi said “sometimes is gets late early”.

I was thinking maybe, but wondered if I missed some other comments or your logic circuit glitched, lol. You know I’m not opposed to sarcasm.

Yes, the pitching is a bigger problem, or should be anyway. The other issue can have ramifications in the club house we’ll never know about. In other words, one problem is BDW and Mo being BDW and Mo for multiple years running now, and therefore expected by many of us here, while the other turned into high public drama because Oli made it that way. It’s an unforced error as we say in tennis. Then add Oli’s selective enforcement (twice now) while he waxes righteously about non-negotiable unwavering standards is puke-worthy to me. In combat, leaders like that are usually wise to station themselves at the rear of their troops.

Johnny’s a lot of things, Euro, but stupid isn’t one of them. He clearly expressed that he, “wished these conversations had remained in the clubhouse.” That tells me that Johnny ain’t too happy about his field managers’ public display of patently bad judgement concerning the manner in which he disciplined his CF’er. Johnny’s calm, cool and collected in the public arena, but it’s my best guess that he became a bit unhinged when he was presented with the fiasco displayed at the post-game presser the other night and I’m entirely certain he let Marmol know not to do it again. Moreover, if this team were to really tank during the first half, I can envision this incident being used as convenient fodder for a sudden Marmol dismissal. As for the players, or “troops” so to speak, they almost have to have formed valid concerns that their leader has little or no interest in protecting their dignity or reputation. That sort of atmosphere creates the genuine possibility for the act of mutiny.

If there is truly dissension in the ranks that isn’t good and will need to be dealt with but at this point it is difficult for us to know if this will linger or if it is a blip on the radar. Also teams can sometimes overcome internal issues. The Oakland A’s of the early 70’s couldn’t stand each other, couldn’t stand their owner, and often came to fisticuffs, yet they won five consecutive pennants and three consecutive world series.

What we do know right now is that our pitching staff smells like raw sewage. Until that is addressed all the kum ba yah stuff won’t help.

Other than the 5 consecutive Oakland AL pennants, (They only won 3) that’s the genuine truth, gscottar. The Yankees of the mid to late 70’s are another good example. The crux of the biscuit, so to speak, is the manner in which teams respond to a situation like that. Sometimes the proverbial fire under a backside produces positive results.

Correct 1TD. The A’s won the division five consecutive years. Charley Finley, now that guy was a character.
