When are the minor leaguers scheduled to report to ST? Will that go on as planned or will the lockout have an impact on their ST as well? Anyone know?
I have requested date and schedule details and will write about it when I get it. Based on past years, I would guess around March 7 for reporting.
I’ve written about the minor league impact of the lockout and have also discussed it on the weekly Danny Mac podcasts. The main rub is that all 40-man players are locked out. In the big picture, minor league camp should proceed on a normal schedule.
The big question is whether they will open up the minor league complex to fans every day. Do you have any information on that, Brain? Any information would be greatly appreciated. We’re booked to be down there March 6th – March 13th.
At this time, I do not have any information about access. At best, those dates would probably only be workouts. Likely too early for minor league games.

The minor leaguers not on the 40 man are out practicing this morning for the 1st time! And the gates are open to the minor league complex. Watching Gorman taking grounders at 2B right now. Great to see some baseball again!

Gorman is big for a second baseman, but he moves well. It’s funny to see him take grounders with all the little second basemen.
These first few days, the players are in groups regardless of level – infielders, outfielders, catchers, etc. Watched the outfielders for awhile. One stood out as far as size, athletic build, athletic ability, etc. What a stud.
Baez. Wow.Apparently Masyn Winn will forego pitching and focus just on playing SS. Pitching will be there if the hitting falters and he needs a plan b. So much for him being a two-way player.
Saw Walker, Winn, Gorman, Burleson, and Cho today. Walker’s a brute.
Tremendous power. Winn is quick as a cat. Cho is a good looking all around athlete. Saw Burleson in batting practice. In 5 pitches, he slashed what would have been a single to right, took one to left for what would have been a single, and smashed one over the fence in right center. Very impressive.Both Gorman and Walker took infield practice yesterday. Watched them closely. Gorman was passable, but not very smooth and nimble at 2B. Walker isn’t a third basemen. Both of them also took batting practice.
Gorman was impressive, with a strong, powerful level swing. Walker looked like a man among boys. Everyone stopped and watched as he hit elevated bullet after bullet.Thanks for sharing your thoughts, bc. It seems like you share the thought that Gorman won’t be very good at 2B. Hopefully he gets a little more comfortable in time.
I am not surprised by the eyewitness reports on Gorman’s and Walker’s defense. We should keep in mind that the focus on strike throwing ground ball pitchers suggests that the GG type infield is a core part of the overall strategy. It will be interesting to see how things develop, including with the shortstop position.

Although there for only 7 days, and the 40 man hadn’t reported yet, still got to see a number of the prospects up close and personal during workouts – Gorman, Walker, Liberatore, Winn, Burleson, Baez,
Baker, Thompson, McGreevey, Holgate, M. Nunez, Perez, Pallante, Hence, Prater, Koperniak, Love, and Romari, etc. Gorman, Walker, and Baez are stars in the making. Winn and Burleson are also impressive.Hey bc, what was your impression of Baez? I know you said he’s a star in the making, but what did you get to see him do? He’s certainly a high ceiling athlete and we’re sort of due to have one work out.
He has a perfect athlete’s body, 25. I look for size, strength, and agility. He has all of those. He moves smoothly for a big guy and has a beautiful level swing. I’ve been going to Spring Training for 20 years, and haven’t seen a better
prospect. Just hope he’s not another Fletcher (whom I didn’t see down there).
