If the Cards win the division, they will likely be the no. 3 seed. If so, all three games would be at home. Potential opponents are Milwaukee, Atlanta, San Diego, Philly.
If they are the Wild Card, just about any scenario is possible.

This year more than others, for sure. The Yankees and Astros are miles ahead of the best the AL Central will have to offer, as are the Dodgers and Mets ahead of the NL Central frontrunners. Anything can happen in October, but I do think that it’s fair to give byes to the top teams in the regular season.
You’re dead right about anything at all can happen. That’s why I always abhorred the idea of a 1 game WC fiacso. Heck, anyone who’s followed this game for a minute or two knows that on any given day the Kia Tigers could win a game vs. the ’27 Yankees. That’s just the way baseball is. At any rate, I think the new format’s an improvement.
I don’t like short series as they always favor the underdog – anything can happen over a weekend. 3 games with all 3 at home to the higher seed does beat the heck out of a 1 game crap shoot though.
Byes are not always an advantage as sitting for up to a week can sometimes lead to some rust. Baseball is probably affected less than other team sports.
I am not really in favor of expanded playoffs as it cheapens the accomplishments of the regular season. IMO the larger % of teams that make the playoffs the shorter a regular season you need to separate the wheat from the chaff.
But since that is the direction pro sports is headed then – just shorten the regular season back to 154 games (or even less), expand the playoffs from 6 to 8 in each league – and have the first round be 5 game (or even 7 game) series 1 v 8, 2 v 7, 3 v 6, and 4 v 5.
When MLB expands to 32 teams then 16 teams in the playoffs means the regular sesson cuts 1/2 the teams and seeds the rest. Again, I’m not a huge fan of this system but we are almost there anyway so….
Well some may be unhappy with the third division winner playing an extra round but that’s the way it should be. The higher seeds should be for the teams that go out from the get go and try to win it all, not try and win just enough to rely on a hope and a prayer. Sad with a team that is highly popular in it’s area and outside of the dodgers, routinely brings in the highest attendance. For me I still wish there were no wild cards, just two divisions, winners take all. Wild card may bring excitement to the casual fans but to me it’s just encouraged more mediocrity. Everywhere from bad mediocrity to ok and good mediocrity. It alone creates its own analytical statistics like how long a team has finished with a non losing season or making the playoffs a straight bunch of years. I know most prefer the wild cards but not me. When you don’t give out a bunch of meaningless trophies at the end of the year, that means the teams that don’t make the playoffs have to come up with good plans and/or take bigger risk.
Anything can happen but any path to the WS would go through NYM certainly and very likely LAD. Contemplating that highlights how huge the Montgomery acquisition is as it gives us 3 starters who can turn in a shut down performance. If all three are on, we will be hard to beat however good the opponent is.
Let’s just see who the best three starters are in a month and then line them up for the post-season. Hell, one of them could be Flaherty. Hey… it could happen.
If Scherzer and deGrom are healthy, the Mets have a heck of a chance to get to the Series.
November baseball – just seems wrong. Someday we will likely have a guy known as “Mr November”.
As for Flaherty, I can see him being sort of a Jim Palmer type. Palmer came up and was real good as a rookie, then missed the better part of the next two years.
He came back in his fourth season and was arguably the best pitcher in the American League for the next decade.
Last night game I think represents my biggest concern. We had 12 hits 7 from Goldy and Arenado. They were the only one with rbi. We need others to step up.
Oliver…We sure do. No one else has collected reasonably close to 50 RBI’s. O’Neill’s the closest at 41. That’s pretty good considering he only has 250 AB’s. It’d be nice if he could go on a stertch run similar to ’21. Edman’s the closest to O’Neill in the RBI category with 39, but that’s not Eddie’s role on this ballclub. Gorman’s certainly a candidate to generate some power production, but the Redbird manager seems reluctant to place him in the line-up vs. LHP. He’s collected 31 RBI’s in 231 AB’s. At any rate, I’m on the same page with your comment.

You know how you can tell if you’re super smart? If after shortly reading Brian’s above playoff chart, you have it all perfectly organized in your head. If the playoffs were to end today, you would know exactly who plays who and where and when. Then as the regular season winds down and there are changes in where teams may be positioned, you immediately are able to make the proper adjustments in your mind, without having to put it on paper or reviewing a tangible chart. I wish I were one of those gifted individuals whom could do that. But I believe we have a few people right here at the Cardinal Nation with the unusually keen mental capabilities to pull it off.

Tickets for the four potential NLCS games, starting as low as $50, will be available at cardinals.com, via phone at 314.345.9000 and at the Busch Stadium Box Office. All tickets will be digitally delivered exclusively via the MLB Ballpark app. Tickets are limited to four per customer, per game.
