RHP Miles Mikolas (0-2, 5.06) vs. RHP Luis Castillo (7-15, 4.20)
BSM // KMOX // WIJR
Also BSSW+ in Oklahoma and Arkansas and BSSO in TN, KY and MSOn paper it’s a pitching mis-match. Castillo turned it around during a start in St. Louis a couple of months ago. But then again, there’s a reason why you play the game and one never knows what might happen.
We need to win these next two games against the Reds. Cannot afford to fall 4-5 games behind them with only three weeks to go.

It is pretty over for St Louis, as even if the Reds and/or Padres split their remaining games, our club would need to go 15-7 over their remaining games.
If one of those rivals goes say 13-9, we would have to go 17-5. Chances of a .500 team playing at that pace over 22 games is almost nil.
Still, you are clawing for a chance to beat the odds. Why in the world would you not play anyone other than your best players? Shildt’s lineups and batting orders are non-sensical.
Are there still any believers out there? Of course there are. The occasional miracle does happen. I wish fervently for one. Unfortunately we need two. Miracle one, we have to play better baseball than we have all season (perhaps de Jong will bat .600 for the rest of the year), and miracle two, others need to fail in uncharacteristic fashion (How many teams fall into a precipitous slump at the same time)?
No matter, let’s go down swinging, let’s see some offense, let’s produce runs, lots of ’em, let’s at least scare the doo doo out of those guys ahead of us in the standings.

We did catch a break last night, believe it or not. Both the Phillies and the Padres lost.

Why in the world would you not play anyone other than your best players? Shildt’s lineups and batting orders are non-sensical.
You might be giving Shildt too much credit by calling them his lineups and batting orders. And the Cards have given us a few clues the last few years that the reason they don’t play the best players might be because they don’t know who they are.
It’s not like Shildt is sitting some difference maker/impact player. Against RHP there just isn’t much he can do that would matter. We don’t have contact hitters or situational hitters and we aren’t likely to string hits together whatever the lineup. We just have to hope we get enough solo homers and the occasional 2 run homer.

9. Miles Mikolas (R) PAt least Shildt has come to realize that Carlson does not produce much vs righties and moved him down. I guess he knows Edman has an OBP of .308 vs righties, which stinks in the leadoff slot, but what can he do?

Sosa’s platoon split vs. RHP: BA .292, OBP .365, but I think he always bats down in the order regardless of pitcher handedness.
It has indeed been a group effort in our medicore ball club this year. Mistakes have been made from the top of the decision making tree down through the ranks.
Still anyone who has watched the games can see that Sosa is playing the pants off DeJong. So why would you continue to throw Paul out there? It’s not like you do not have a better option there.
Some of the lineups can be debated. I think Shidlt does not put guys in the best position, but obviously that is not provable. And he tends to make over use of pitchers, plus on the flip side will leave in guys too long. In general he is not real tuned in to the dynamics of the game. He would be okay with more talent, but where you need to get all you can from what you have, he is not the best. Probably not the worst either. I think guys like playing for him, and the club has the intensity to succeed.
Then of course you have players who have not performed as well as you had hoped. DeJong and Carpenter have been downright terrible – but this has been their trend over the last few years so it is not a great surprise. Carlson has not been the superstar in the making we had hoped he would be, although he still could be at some point.
And finally, an overwhelming amount of injuries to pitchers has doomed us.
Just nothing really positive to hang your hat on. If we squint a little, we can see that Tyler O’Neill has come along well – needs to still work on making more consistent contact, but there is a lot there to like. Arenado and Goldschmidt have had good years, and look to have something left. Yadi continues to chug along and be good, although not great.
The potential is there for this club to be good next year. Despite his shortcomings, I would let Shidlt manage out his contract and see if things can work out better in ’22.

If I were in charge, I would leave that decision to the new PBO.
Well, that was a cluster. Carp nubs it and despite an errant throw it’s a DP that cost us a run because Bader screwed up sliding wide at second. What else?

It is hard to watch Carp as he closes out this season (and hopefully his career). He has not gotten a hit in his last 28 at bats. Wish he could have finished strong.
Stringing some two out hits together to tie it up was good to see. We should be up by one though if guys knew the rules. Hope the two Reds who collided are OK. They walked off looking like nothing too bad think. With watching grandkids I missed the particulars.
Redbirds have the top of the order coming up in the bottom of the eighth. Need to make some noise here and score some runs.
I sure hope Mikolas is not 100%. We still owe him $34M not counting the balance still due for 2021. We need him to pitch better than this in 2022. BTW, no one mentioned it, but another former Cardinal, Max Schrock, is currently batting .319 with an OPS of .881 for the Reds. Glad Reyes got him out tonight.
