August 31, 2021 at 10:16 am #171301Nice to get a win last night, and although we are still in contention for the second wild card, it is still a long shot. I think the Padres will be the team that ends up there. There are four teams still with a realistic shot, us, the Pads, Reds and Phillies.
So we are battling three other teams for supremacy, or more accurately the “best of the mediocre group”. At full strength San Diego is the best of the group, but they also play in the best division. The Cards, Reds and Phillies have a lot of flaws.
Good to have something to play for, but it is sort of an illusion. However, you think of all the games we have given away this year and think we could be in pretty good shape had we kept those games in the “W” column. This is a year where I really think a better manager would have us improved by 3 or 4 games. No way to prove that of course, but the silly lineups and the over-utilization of non-producing players Shildt does has certainly watered us down to some degree.
August 31, 2021 at 10:21 am #171302PS – In full disclosure I will site one stat that defends Shildt’s manager skills. We are 4 games over .500, while our pythag is 2 games under. Our run differential is -12.
That shows we are winning more than our share of close ones, and those often come down to who the manager is using in high leverage situations.

ParticipantThe highest probability for rain today in Cincy is 43%, as you scroll through the hourly forecasts.

ParticipantWell kind of sucks. One good thing is maybe he gives bader a game off. I understand shildt loves his defense and I do to but I think when players are going through a rough time at the plate after a hot period, giving them a game off can really give them some time just to relax and just take a game in. It can do some good far as rejuvenating them a bit. Sitting a player during a dh isn’t same as regular game but still it wouldn’t hurt. While personally I’m fine generally with bader not hitting especially if the main guys are getting it done but lots of time that isn’t the case.

ParticipantIn 2015, here was the line of Peter Bourjos –
.200/.290/.333/.623. He was considered the best CF in MLB.
The Cards got rid of him, defense or not.Bader’s last full season, 2019, he had the following line –
.205/.314/.366/.680This season, Bader has the following lines by month –
April – only played in 1 game
May – .217/.304/.420/.724
June – Hurt
July – .357/.402/.619/1.021
August – .152/.229/.192/.421August 31, 2021 at 4:52 pm #171317Good post Cranny. Guess Lazer Baders not so bad after all. Just lately? Alot of variation there. He was so hot in July and now not. Whatever he did when he came back from being hurt , he needs to do it again. Saw one game last week he was catching balls all over the place. Like a human vaccuum cleaner. Just does not look confident at the plate now.
August 31, 2021 at 5:06 pm #171318Bader is what he is, a slightly below average offensive player, but an excellent defensive player at a premium defensive position. He is at a 2.2 WAR this year, which is acceptable.
Unfortunately because no one on our team is having a stellar season on offense, Bader’s lack of punch is a little more of a liability. But he brings the leather, and until we can get someone that is better he is certainly doing enough to merit regular play. The veteran Molina as an example, has been worse than Bader on offense and has a 1.3 WAR to date. Tommy Edman, even with the recent hot streak, has the same OPS+ as Harry and a 2.9 WAR.
Sure, it would be great to have a Jim Edmonds in center. But we don’t have that, and Harry has been better than anyone else at that spot.
August 31, 2021 at 7:07 pm #171321I don’t remember CF defense being a problem that cost us games when Carlson was covering it.

ParticipantYou don’t see the plays Carlson makes cause he makes catches any average outfielder can make. So yea h cam catch the basic fly ball and sometimes the really good play but a lot of the catches bader makes fall in for hits with other guys an lead to runs either directly or indirectly. Those plays also keep our pitchers from throwing more pitches which is not figured in to my knowledge. You ask those pitchers if they appreciate those plays, they will say yes in a heartbeat. The third is guys like bader are on the rare side, Sure some players have the speed but not all players will lay out for the ball, almost always play it safe, others may lay out but have a hard time keeping ball in mitt when they hit the ground, bader has that pretty much down pat. Sure we can find guys that can hit better but there will be a trade off. That guy will hit about what everyone else on the team is hitting which is about or slightly below average. So he will strike out a lot, not come through in the clutch a lot but he won’t make those plays that turn innings and games around. Will that lead us to the promised land. Maybe or maybe we are same team, just with worse defense and probably a below 500 record. I’m a defense guy, the best teams the Cardinals have had, had good to great defense for the most part.
August 31, 2021 at 9:17 pm #171324Good comments 82. Carlson is not the defender Bader is.
The best Cardinal teams could really pick it up the middle. This club isn’t bad, although Yadi is a little long in the tooth and Edman is good, but not Kolten Wong. DeJong is good too, but his bat has gotten so weak and Sosa has provided a such a nice upgrade that you just can’t afford to have him in there.

ParticipantWillie – I’d opt for a good hitter who’s an above average defender in CF. Most all field no hit CFers end up losing their jobs eventually. I don’t agree that Bader saves more than perhaps one run a week.
He is theatrical, though.September 1, 2021 at 12:12 pm #171360Is this still our game thread for Game #1 of the Wednesday DH?
September 1, 2021 at 12:22 pm #171361Hey Rats just saw the first inning , no posts yet on weds thread. Guess I’m gonna start over there and see what happens. Goldy first inning dinger last 3 games in a row.
September 1, 2021 at 12:38 pm #171365Laser Bader dinger first time up to bat!

ParticipantBy definition we dont really have any good hitting options for center field, we have average hitting options. I’ll be all fine if the Willie walks onto the field but he’s not there right now. But I’m sure by your standards we have some good options. But not by mine which are higher.
