Enter Dominic Leone….now we’re really in a pickle as a base hit has Tigers straddling both 1st & 3rd and 0 outs. Candelario strikes out! Didn’t Pittsburgh have a hurler by the name of John Candelario back in the day? Goodrum….not related in any fashion to Jack Nicholson’s friend “Redrum” strolls towards the dish. Goodrum strikes out trying to murder the ball as steals 2nd….2 out now with 2 runners in scoring position but it sure looks brighter than it did a few minutes ago. Castellanos walks. Bases loaded to the gills for Victor Martinez…and Leones’s first offering nearly konks Martinez on the foot. Rips a base h….no!!! Wong dives and robs Martinez and the Tigers of at least 2 runs…what a catch!!
The Flamethrower bringing the heat at a steamy 103mph to Mikie Mahtook ….who whiffs without any tussle whatsoever. McCann pops it up to 2nd where it shouldn’t pose any difficulties for the slick fielding Wongf…..2 outs. Rodriguez grounds out to DeJong at short as Mr. Hicks cruises thru the 8th with the greatest of ease….still deadlocked at 3 heading to the inning of decision…the 9th!
– DeJong pops out to short on a Shane Greene 3-2 offering….and there they go again with an extra unnecessary letter at the end of one of their relievers last name….unbelievable. Wisdom strikes out. Bader needs to play a little long ball here….Harrison dumps a base hit to left in front of the charging Mahtook. Wong batting….puts a bit of a charge into one to center, but it won’t have enough gas to make things fun….Reyes has it and the Birds do not score in the 9th in a tie ballgame.
Hicks on the hill again for the 9th with Bud Norris warming up in the background . Jordan goes 3-0 on Lugo, but then comes right back to K him justv3 pitches later…sweet! Reyes a base hit down towards the line in left and mysteriously Detroit does not test Ozuna’s arm as Reyes doesn’t venture past 1st. Candelario homers to left and this one is in the books.
This was a bad loss. Their worst starter on the mound and couldn’t get the W. Now the next two are agaisnt the Tigers’ two best. They did just take 3/4 against the Yankees so I guess they come in hot. The next two are must must must wins.
We just lost to a .411 team who is 22.5 games behind in their division. Let that sink in. No excuses whatsoever for not winning the next two.
Sorry I couldn’t get that win for the guys. Not a bad game. Actually pretty well played on both sides.
I wouldn’t have sent Jordan out there. He really is erratic. Stuff is there. Pitch selection and control need work.
Nevertheless. I had a great time. I kept getting bothered by drunk people trying to talk to me when all I wanted to do was watch the game. Amazing how I’m the rude guy who wants to watch the game he laid good money for tickets to watch.
We lost. It’s a bummer. But a walk off is always memorable. Add that to me watching some nice in between inning conversations on the bench. Willie and Janet were talking a lot during the game.
Anyways.
Go Cards!Looked promising after Wong saved the day with yet another great defensive gem to close the 8th leaving three runners stranded. But the lack of offense hurt. Need to hit some multi-run homers now and then.
To stay in this thing, the Cards gotta win the next two.

I’m worried too but right now they got to get this closer thing settled. They can still win this series.
Over the years the Reds and Tigers have been the undoing of many a team’s playoff aspirations. I bet the revengeful Detroit fans from 12 years ago would love nothing better than to see their beloved team deal us a devastating series sweep. A crucial game such as tonight’s is exactly what our very own Jack Flaherty was born to excel at. If this were 200 years ago and Flaherty an Apache warrior, it would be him that the tribe would count upon to keep it’s members safe from attack. And tonight the St. Louis Cardinals are depending on Jack to keep their playoff hopes a kindling and opposition off the offensive warpath. Jack’s time is now and I believe he 100% knows what is about to occur in this game……and we Cardinal fans are going to love it.
The magic carpet ride seemed to change the day that Shildt was named permanent manager.
Don’t get me wrong because I still think he is the man for the job but perhaps we should have waited until the end of the year to make the announcement. It seems to have changed the mojo.
Nonsense.What changed the mojo was Bullpen failures,JMart,Ozuna,Carpenter all failing at the same time.Pitchers inability to throw strikes.Naming a damn interim manager to regular manager did not make the Cards go 5-5 the last 10 games.Grasping at straws people.
I don’t know, Bw……I think GScott was on to something. I’m a firm believer that then you’re riding high in the saddle and kicking major butt like the Cards were doing, you don’t change anything. And that includes changing the status, in any manner, of your skipper. That’s why I hated seeing Leone coming back to the pen and Ponce exiting it. Why toy with a harmonious chemistry? These kids (and the hot bat of Matt Carpenter and the improved play of Wong) were what was fueling the resurgence of this team.
