There was a recent retrosimba piece on Harry Caray and it linked the box score to our 14 inning opening day loss to the Pirates in 1969.
The marathon took all of 3 hours and 19 minutes to play, about what a typical 9 inning game takes today, and the Redbirds struck out only 3 times. Bob Gibson and friends struck out 12 Bucs, and walked none, but still lost.
I still recall listening to that one as kid , and being disappointed. I kind of sensed the season would not be the same as the previous two, with the sudden trade of Orlando Cepeda, and rumors of discontent on the club.
