One of the more important functions of a union is to provide job security for its members. In some cases the union will require that the employer hire back employees who have been laid off prior to allowing new personnel to be hired. Sometimes the union will limit the number of job applicants that will be accepted into the union. I don’t see how this can work with baseball. I don’t see how you can guarantee a job to a 32 year old player just because his stats are just as good, or better, than a lower paid prospect. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
